I smile. "Hey, you two! Enjoying the event so far?"
Kenny smiles very slightly. "Yeah, having a blast. Are you two..."
Bradley blushes. "A couple? Yeah..."
Kenny sighs. "Look, I'm sorry for what happened at the Christmas party. I was drunk-and that's no excuse- but I'd still like to apologize. I didn't mean any of it."
He looks at me and I instantly freeze. I don't know how to respond.
Bradley laughs. "It's alright! It brought us closer after all! Don't worry about it, dude."
"I'm glad. Enjoy the evening you two." He waves before walking away from us, Bebe follows closely after him.
I exhale a sigh of relief. Bradley squeezes my arm and smiles. "Hey, Marj, I'm proud of you. Wanna get some food?"
"Uhh, yes please. I am starving." I giggle.
As the night goes on, me and Bradley laugh and learn more about each other. He wants to be an architect, build big bridges like the ones in Portland and DC. It's really cool to listen to him talk about something he's so passionate about.
After a few hours everyone starts going home. The room slowly gets emptier, making our own conversation easier to eavesdrop on, so Bradley and I go out to his car.
I take off my high heels and complain a bit, to which he makes a joke that makes us both break down laughing.
We get into his car and he drives around to the back of the school and pulls to a stop. I look at him, confused as he taps his fingers against the steering wheel.
"Bradley? What's up?"
His face flushes red. "Uhm... I really like you, Marj... and you look... stunning tonight."
"Okay..?"
"Can we... I don't know, like... make out... maybe?"
I giggle. "Aww, you're adorable. Yes, we can."
He takes a deep breath before leaning over to kiss me. Our kisses are slow, and a bit sloppy, but they pick up in intensity over time.
I crawl over the console and he scoots his seat back. His hands slide up and around my waist.
He smiles into the kiss as I straddle him. "I'm gonna get lipstick all over my face."
"Oh- my bad..."
"Don't worry about it." He continues to kiss me.
His hands wonder down to my hips and he presses his own hips up.
I should tell him... before it gets where I think it's going.
"Hey- Bradley... can I say something?"
He kisses my neck. "Go ahead."
"I uhm... mmm- I'm transgender-" my body feels warm.
He stops and stares at me.
"... Bradley?"
"What? Like- You're a Man?"
"No- I'm a girl, I just wasn't born a-"
He pushes me off of him and wipes his mouth off. "You didn't tell me you were a guy?"
"I didn't think it mattered!"
"Of course it matters!"
"Bradley..."
"I'm Christian, I can't date a man."
"I'm not a-"
"You lied to me."
"I didn't! I swear I just... I don't know, I didn't think..."
"Marjorine, please just..."
I feel tears welling up in my eyes. I bite the insides of my cheeks but can't stop them.
"Look, I'm sorry. It's great that you're... expressing yourself... I just need some time to think. Would you be okay... walking home? It's not too far..."
He won't even look at me.
Without another word I get out of his car and walk to the side of the building. I watch his tail lights disappear into the night.
I fall against the wall and slide down to the ground. I'm sobbing now, I don't know what else to do.
