Kenny and I finish washing the dishes. He sets everything back in the cupboards.
"Mar? Are you cold? Your dress is wet now."
"I think I should be fine. I need to get home soon anyway so I can just change there."
"Do you need a ride? You live closer to the school, right? It's a long walk."
"I should be fine."
"It's raining."
"Oh... Then I guess I better accept."
He grabs his car keys.
"You can drive?"
"Not legally."
"Then why..?"
"I'm a better driver than my brother is, so I usually drive the truck around. We will be fine. I'll get the car started if you wanna go say goodbye to Karen."
"Okay, I'll be out in a second."
Karen is in her room brushing out her hair.
"Karen? I'm heading out now, Kenny is driving me back to my house."
She raises an eyebrow at me. "Oooo..."
"Stop that."
"Hehee..."
"I had fun today. We should do it again sometime. I'll see you after school on Monday."
"Okay, thanks Marjorine!"
I start to walk away but she says one more thing.
"Marjorine... Kenny has a thing for pigtails."
I continue walking. If I turn around and react she might see how red my face is.
-
"Ready?" Kenny says as I get in his car.
"Yeah."
He turns on his headlights and the windshield wipers. It really is pouring outside.
"You're just living where Butters used to live, right? I think I know the way."
"Yeah. The brown house."
"Got it."
We both sit quietly as we drive. My brain is spinning. He is so much more caring than I had thought. I guess he acts differently in front of his friends.
When we pull up to my house Kenny takes off his orange jacket. He hands it to me. "Use this as a makeshift umbrella. It's pouring outside and there's a good 15 feet to your front door. You'll get sick if you walk through this."
"Are you sure? You wear this all the time..."
"Just give it back on Monday."
I take the jacket from him and put it on, zipping it up and slipping the hood on. I hold out my arms, the sleeves are too long for me.
"Haha." Kenny laughs at me.
"What?"
"It looks so cute- BIG- it looks so big on you."
"Yeah, I guess you're a size or two bigger than me..."
We stare at each other for a moment.
"Well, I'll see you on Monday, Kenny."
"Yeah, see you."
I leave the truck and enter my house. Kenny doesn't drive away until he sees that I enter my house.
I sneak up to my room before my parents can see me.
His jacket smells like strawberry shampoo. Is that the kind he uses? His sister probably picks it out for him.
I set the jacket up before taking a shower and going to bed.
-
I'm in a hallway at school, it looks different... Am I dreaming?
Kenny walks down the hall to meet with me.
"I love your pigtails Mar... Just my type."
"Your type?"
"My type of woman, you. Everything about you."
"Kenny?"
"Mar..."
He inches closer... Are we about to kiss!?
Our lips stop one millimeter from each other.
"Butters! Wake up!"
-
I open my eyes, it's 7 am.
I touch my lips, I feel... disappointed...
