As we get into Kenny's old truck, I ask him if I can run home quickly to change clothes. I want to wear a short, tight dress I got recently so that I look nice.
After I change, we go to a gas station for sodas and snacks. Once we are all set we make our way up the mountain, his car does pretty well on dirt roads, which are prominent near the top of this small mountain.
"This spot look okay to you?" He stops the car in a clearing of trees.
"It looks perfect..." I can already see some stars and the sun hasn't even finished setting.
We get out of the car so we could sit on the hood of the car. Kenny put a towel he keeps in his car onto the hood so I don't get my dress dirty. Then he climbs up next to me and wraps his arm around me.
"This was a really good idea... it's beautiful." Kenny smiles up at the stars.
"I thought you might like it. This was always where I would go to escape my parents. It always helped me through the rough patches."
"Speaking of..." Kenny looks at me. "Have you heard from your parents?"
"I still talk to my mom from time to time. Dad still doesn't want to talk to me. My mom said he's managing his new lifestyle well."
"I still feel bad for blinding him..."
"And I still think it's incredibly ironic."
"Yeah... it kinda is." He chuckles.
"How about your parents? I haven't seen them around in a while. Not since I moved out."
Kenny goes silent for a moment. "They..." he takes a deep breath. "They just kinda... left. They took my dad's car and all their things and they just left. We haven't seen them for almost a year."
"Seriously? Why would they do that?"
"No clue. Maybe now that Karen is old enough to handle herself, they thought it was time to get away from us kids."
"Does it upset you?"
He smiles again. "Not really. I kinda like having the house to ourselves, but every once in a while I think about it. They sucked but I still hope they're okay."
"That's how I feel about my dad."
I look back at the stars. They're so bright now that the sun is completely gone. It's beautiful. "So pretty..." I whisper.
"Yeah. This might be the most beautiful thing I've seen."
I turn my head and see that he has been looking at me.
He leans in and kisses me. "You're perfect, Mar..."
My face feels like it's on fire. "Kenny... how tall is the roof of your car?"
"Uhm... probably 4.5ish feet from floor to ceiling. Why?"
"Do you think we could both fit in there if I was on top of you...?" I look away bashfully.
"... one hundred percent."
