After dinner, I go to Kenny's room. I guess it's my room now too.
Kenny is asleep, he didn't come out for dinner.
I should give him some space. Karen said he needs to think.
I grab one of his hoodies from the floor and use it as a pillow. I sleep on the floor next to his bed. I would just sleep on the couch but I want to be near him at least.
-
I wake up before Kenny. He is still laying there in bed.
"Kenny..."
I place a hand on his shoulder. He flinches.
"You were awake?"
He rolls over. "I've been awake the whole time. I didn't sleep."
"Why?"
He sits up and sighs. "I just have a lot on my mind."
I sit next to him. "Kenny. Can you please tell me what's going on? I can't help you if you don't tell me what's wrong. I'm really worried."
"I will tell you... It's just hard."
"Why?"
"The last thing I want is to upset you."
"I can handle being upset, Kenny."
"But what if you want to leave me again..."
"Is that what's stopping you from telling me? I won't leave you, Kenny. I'm dedicated to working things out before jumping to conclusions. We both agreed to be open with communication. So if you tell me what's going on, I promise I will hear you out and stay as calm as I can. Okay?"
"Okay..."
"I'm ready to listen."
He looks up and the ceiling and bites his lip. It seems like he might be holding back tears.
"Mar. I did something bad."
"Bad?"
"Yeah. I got emotional and I did something I shouldn't have."
"What was it?"
"After you got knocked out everyone in the room just kinda, stood still. We all watched you, waiting for you to get up. Eventually, I rushed to you and shook you. You did open your eyes for a moment, but then you went limp. I thought you..." His voice cracks.
I grab his hand and he takes a breath.
"I thought you were gone. You wouldn't respond. I couldn't think about anything other than anger. It's like my body is lit on fire. I stood up and... I charged your dad. I ran into him, knocked him to the floor... He was screaming, your mom was screaming, Karen was screaming, but I just kept punching over and over. My hands were covered in blood. Not just your dads, but my own as well. He tried to get me off him. He punched and scratched but I just kept... I just kept punching him. My knuckles were split open. I-" His voice shakes more.
I have questions, but I wait for him to continue.
"He stopped moving. When Karen was able to pull me off, he wasn't moving anymore. Your mom started crying and Karen lifted me to my feet. We got you and your things and drove away. We left him and your mom there."
