"Marjorine!" My mother greets me with a tight hug.
"Hi, momma."
"How's my baby girl?"
"I'm good..."
"Steven is just over here."
My dad is sitting in a booth in the corner of the shop. A large golden retriever with a service dog vest is sitting next to him.
"Is that you?" He asks as I sit.
"Yeah dad. It's me."
"Marjorine. How have you been?"
I'm a bit surprised he used my name. "I've been good."
I take a seat at the table with my mother.
"I'm sure you've heard the news..." my dad starts. "We have had our differences Marjorine. I was hoping we could put that all behind us and be a family again."
"You're okay with me being trans?"
"Yes. And you can date whoever you want to. I won't get in the way."
"This is... surprising. I didn't expect this from you after all this time."
He nods. "I've had a lot of time to think."
"Well... thank you... I appreciate all this."
My mom smiles. "We would be happy to share our earnings with you my dear! Just don't tell anybody. You know how people get with money."
My face feels hot. "Right..."
My dad sits up straight. "There is just... one catch."
"What is it?"
"Well, we found a company that does a risky surgery that could restore some of my vision. We plan to spend our money on that. The only problem is they need to study the properties of a brain similar to mine. Meaning a close blood relative... and well, you're all I've got left."
I pause for a moment. "What would I have to do?"
"All you have to do is come to the hospital and they'll put you to sleep while observing how your optic nerves work. It'll be quick."
"I see..."
"Remember, you'd be a millionaire."
"Can I have some time to think about it?"
My mom cuts in. "Of course sweetheart! Let us know when you have made up your mind."
After a while of small talk, I return to my apartment. This is the kind of opportunity no one could turn down. It feels too good to be true.
I get logged into my laptop to do some research. After a while I find the procedure my father was talking about.
Everything about his deal seemed fine, other than the fact he called the procedure risky.
"Patients will give a small fraction of their brain cells to help clone and produce working cells for the blinded patient... however, a small percentage of the patients who donate brain cells are the same afterwards."
I scroll down.
"The effects on the donor have a 75% chance of effecting the patient in similar ways to a lobotomy. Death rates are low, however regaining basic cognitive functions is rare."
My heart is pounding inside my chest. This could basically turn me into a vegetable but... two million dollars...
