Kenny takes a long hit of his cigarette as I finish telling my story.

"So... he ended up being a transphobic ass?"

"... I guess so..." I hug my knees.

"Did you know he was religious?"

"Yeah, but he didn't seem like the kind of person to be transphobic. He was so nice to me..."

Kenny laughs ironically. "The world is kinda fucked."

"Yeah..."

"... I'm sorry that happened, Mar. You didn't deserve it."

"Thanks... and uhm..." I bite my lower lip. "I'm sorry. For how things ended with us."

"It's okay. I've made my peace with it." He turns to me. "You gonna be okay?"

"I'll be fine..."

"Good."

I pick up my heels. "I should probably go home."

"Need a ride?"

"You sure?"

"Yeah. It's not a problem." He puts out his cigarette and stands up.

"Okay."

The car ride to my apartment is silent. He rolled down the windows and I can smell the night air as it wafts in through the passenger side window. It's relaxing, but also nerve wracking.

"We're here." He says without looking at me.

I nod. "Thanks again..."

"Yeah."

I open the door.

"Mar?"

"Hm?" I stop halfway out the door.

"You... deserve better. Don't let that guy get to you."

I smile at him. "I'll try."

And with that, I go back to my empty apartment. I lay on my back near the edge of the bed for who knows how long.

After a while of deciding I cannot fall asleep, I decide I should probably just scroll on my phone until I'm tired enough to not think anymore. That's when I see a text from Karen.

Karen: Hey, Marjorine. Kenny told me what happened. Are you doing okay?

Marjorine: Kenny told you?

Karen: yeah, he seemed worried. I think he wanted to help more but thought it would be better if I did.

Marjorine: I see... I'm okay. Just a bit sad is all.

Karen: Do you wanna come over tomorrow? We can watch that cartoon you like? Maybe eat some snacks or something?

Marjorine: To your house? Is Kenny okay with that?

Karen: He suggested it. He says he won't be in the way.

Marjorine: Okay. I think that'll help.

Karen: 3pm?

Marjorine: Yeah! I'll see you then!

Karen: cool!

I sigh and plug in my phone for the night. Knowing I have a supportive friend like her really helps. I think I should finally be able to sleep.
