I'm not sure how long I've been crying. It's 9pm and I'm still sitting on the asphalt. My makeup is probably a mess.
As I start to hear footsteps from around the corner, I quickly wipe off my face. The organizers probably finished cleaning up and are going home. I don't want anyone to find me like this. I don't want people to see me at one of my lowest points.
Of course, just as that thought crosses my mind, I hear the footsteps getting closer and closer. It's a group of people too...
"Haha! Hey man- that was all your fault. I didn't spill anything. You're the one who knocked it down!" A man laughs from just around the corner.
"I thought it was closed..." another voice.
"I'm just gonna stop around the corner here for a smoke." A third guy.
"Want us to join?"
"Sure, if you wanna."
Shit, they're about to see me... but my legs feel too weak...
I rub under my eyes to clean up any mascara.
"... hey, you guys can go, actually." I hear someone say as they turn the corner.
"You sure?"
"Yeah. Go on home. I'll be a bit."
With him in line of sight I can tell it's Kenny.
Of course, who else would it be than my ex to see me pathetic on the ground after getting practically dumped.
He turns the corner and approaches me slowly. When he realizes it's me, he sits several feet to my left and lights his cigarette.
I look down at my high heels about a foot in front of me. "... you smoke now?"
He exhales a puff of smoke into the cold night air. "Yeah."
"Since when?"
"A few weeks ago. My dad gave me his lighter and this is a much better way of blowing off steam than drinking was." He takes another hit from his cigarette.
His silhouette looks like it should be on an album cover right now. The parking lot light illuminates him from behind and the smoke he blows out dissipates slowly into the night.
He glances over at me for a moment before he faces forward again. "You're staring."
"Sorry, the smoke is just... calming to watch."
He nods slowly.
I sit and watch him smoke for a few more minutes before he speaks again.
"Were you crying?"
"Yeah. I was."
"What happened?"
I take a deep breath and look up at the dark trees. "I think I got dumped."
"Bradley broke up with you?"
"Well... I guess that's really the only thing that could've been. It's kinda a stupid story though..."
"I don't mind. You can let it out. I'm happy to listen, Mar."
"Okay... so, after we left the dinner..."
