Edward is one of the first engines to come from the Furness Railway. He started life as an unmodified K2 class in 1897. He was reported to be a "shy steamer" by his original railway, but these problems were fixed when Edward was fixed up at Crovan's Gate for the first time. He was on loan until 1921, when The Fat Director officially bought him. Edward worked on the NWR from 1916 to1923, when he started to be used less often. Then after the events of Edward's Day Out, Edward re-entered regular service. He has been overhauled multiple times in his working life. Three times that stand out the most are the events of Edward's Exploit, Old Iron and Cabbages. The aftermath of the former resulted in Edward's original cab being replaced by one reminiscent of the NER. The aftermath of the second resulted in Edward just going in for a general overhaul. The aftermath of the final story resulted in Edward needing anew front axle for his leading wheels. Out of all the engines on this list, Edward has had the most physical damage. He is still a kind and wise old engine. He is said to be the only one to be able to keep Bill and Ben in order. He is also one of the main voices of reason whenever anything happens.
