James started his working life on the SE&CR. He came to Sodor in 1925 but crashed after taking a slow goods train. It was later discovered that the accident was caused by sabotage. After the accident, James was given general repairs, and stronger brakes. He was also given a brass dome and his iconic red paint. He piloted at Tidmouth for a while. After an incident involving a broken brake pipe, a newspaper and a leather bootlace, James was put in the shed at Tidmouth. He stayed there until a goods train needed to be taken to Maron. This time, James got the train there without any serious incident. One coupling needed replacing but that was about as serious as it got. Then James took the Wild'Nor'Wester after Gordon was turned around on the loop. After this, James was put mainly on stopping passenger trains, but occasionally pulled goods trains (much to James' displeasure). Shortly after, he went on strike with Gordon and Henry. Once Percy came to Sodor, they started working again. James has had many adventures that are detailed in the books. He's a hard worker, but his vanity gets in the way of this work ethic. His main priority is making sure his paintwork stays shiny and pristine at all times. He also had a very distinct hatred of diesel engines. This was until he met Daisy for the first time. When they realized that they were like each other they eventually became friends. James is stubborn, but still a good engine.
