While Barbara provided faithful service since her NCB days, she still needed help. The board of directors decided to buy two more engines, but soon realized that just sending the order to Crovan's Gate for one was cheaper. Cost effectiveness was paramount in Tidmouth Coal's early days. Designs for a 4 wheel Ruston diesel were borrowed, and Dahlia was completed in 1989. While Barbara is grateful for the help, there was friction at first. Dahlia is a very serious, no-nonsense kind of engine, but she lightened up eventually. Her attitude reflected that of the board members of the time. Efficiency was her first priority, and anything short of perfection was unthinkable. Luckily for her, Barbara's experience helped her realize that getting a job done well is better than getting it done fast.
