Bill and Ben are the two twins engines that work at the China Clay Pits. They were first brought to Sodor in 1948. They had to be short and squat to fit the clearances of the mineshafts. They were built to a design similar to "Judy" of Par Harbor, but with slightly larger boilers. They usually shunted trains around the clay pits and would sometimes take trains up to Brendam. They still do this today. The twins mean well, but they do enjoy a good joke every now and then. Unlike in the television series, Bill and Ben focus more on their work than playing jokes on other engines. They really don't listen to any other engine except for Edward. They see him as the only real authority figure on the line. They like to mess with Boris a lot, but they usually stop when Edward comes around. The only engine they don't mess with beside Edward is Derek. No one is sure why these three get along so well, but they do, nevertheless. They haven't had too many accidents, but there was an incident with an area known as The Drain to the locals. Ben got stuck in a flood there and Thomas, who had been temporarily relocated to the Brendam branch, pulled him out. The twins were forever grateful.
