Fred is the 9th engine on the SKR. He was cobbled together from the parts of two old diesels and sent to the SKR. As a result, he was prone to breaking down. This caused Fred to become lazy. This was mainly because he was afraid of breaking down, so he didn't apply himself. This changed, however, when he had a conversation with Henry. After this Fred tried to persevere through his shortcomings. One day this all came to a head when Fred was running around and helping engines in need. All of that stress completely wrecked Fred's engine. He was eventually sent to the workshop to be repaired. While he was there he made friends with an engine that was being built. Fred has very few accidents on record, but he does have plenty of breakdowns on record. Despite his shortcomings, Fred is still a good engine. He does tend to forget things, however. In this universe, the TVS episodes that depict the events of "Which Way Now?" and "Tuneful Toots" happens with Fred instead of Rusty. These sort of stories seem better suited for an engine with less experience, which Rusty is not.
