Diego is a class 42 diesel that pulled goods and passenger trains on BR. He did this until the 1970s when he was withdrawn. This is where details get shady. Officially, he was cut up at Swindon in 1973, but he somehow ended up at Barrow two years later. He was then sold quietly to the NWR and became its 10th diesel. He was assigned to the Peel Godred Ironworks to pull trains of iron to Barrow. One day some people who claimed to be workmen decided to try an experiment. They welded a hydraulic claw to his roof. The claw was used to collect and move scrap metal around the ironworks. Diego also rips apart old and rusted remains of engines. He seems to enjoy this a little too much. In the television series, he is usually just called Diesel 10 since he didn't have an official name. Diego is painted in an olive green with black hazard stripes. Since Diego's claw exceeds the British loading gauge, he is restricted to the Ironworks. Another engine takes the trains to Barrow. He was also trialed for breakdown duties, but he failed these trials. I have not been able to find any evidence of any accidents on Diego's record. When I asked the engines or crews, they either didn't know, or they wouldn't tell me. I believe that possibly one or several people may have died. It may have something to do with the shady details surrounding Diego. I haven't been able to get the name of the organization that modified Diego, but I have the name of the project: Project War Fist. Diego has been sent away at least 3 times, and every time he comes back, there is always something a little different about him. Maybe it has something to do with this mysterious project.
