Ryan started life on the LNER. He ran suburban trains along one of the branch lines in that region. He still did this in BR days. He also did odd jobs whenever other engines were out of service. He pulled these suburban trains until he was withdrawn in 1962. Ryan was bought by Sir Robert in 1963. Ryan mainly shunted trucks and moved supplies around the estate. He also helped with the rail connection to Ulfstead. After that, Sir Robert sold most of the original museum engines to the NWR. Luckily he acquired a decent number of old engines eventually. Ryan had been painted black since he was built, so he decided to change that. Instead of black, he was painted purple with gold lining. He also had a nameplate on both of his side tanks. He also kept his BR service number. Ryan is one of the largest engine on the estate, and he is also one of the youngest. He likes listening to the stories that the older engines tell him. In the television series, Ryan was always purple. I like the idea of Ryan choosing the color for himself in this universe.
