Barbara is a small tank engine built by Andrew Barclay in 1930. She's a funny little engine who doesn't like being ordered around by bigger engines. She used to work for the National Coal Board in their collieries. Eventually she ended up on Sodor in 1958. At this time, the mine at Tidmouth was part of the NCB network and Great Waterton had been forgotten. Once the NCB became the BCC, the mine at Tidmouth became its own company in 1987. After they went private, they painted Barbara with their company name after a short overhaul. Since she couldn't think of any other color, Barbara decided to stay black, though she did ask for red lining. She gets along with the Ffarquhar engines well. Whenever there is little work to do at the mine, Barbara will sometimes help with shunting at Tidmouth.
