Salty started life as a shunter near Eastleigh in 1958. He was later transferred to Southampton Docks in the 1960s. This was when he discovered his love of the sea. The men there started calling him Salty because of this. He never had any ill will towards the steam engines he replaced. He worked in Southampton until he was withdrawn in 1975. However, instead of being scrapped, Salty was saved by Sir Stephen and was reallocated to Ffarquhar temporarily to help Toby and Mavis. He became the NWR's 7th diesel. He was trialed at the quarry for a few weeks, since Mavis and Flora needed help with a large order of stone. When this was done, Sir Stephen transferred Salty to Brendam Docks because they needed a dedicated engine to shunt there. This delighted Salty and he quickly set to work. Whenever Salty is working, he can usually be heard singing various sea shanties. The trucks seem to behave whenever he does, much to the engines' confusion.
