Donald and Douglas both started life as Caledonian 652s built in 1909.They worked for the LMS and then for BR until 1958. This was when Donald was bought by the NWR. Sir Charles had only ordered Donald, but Douglas came with him as well. They both arrived a year later. Sir Charles was planning to send one twin away, but eventually decided to keep them both. They were painted a shade of blue that was reminiscent of Caledonian Railway livery but was more teal than blue. They helped with goods and passenger trains and also helped clear snow on the main line until the Arlesburgh Branch line was reopened. Then they were both transferred to this line, along with Duck. Eventually, they were reclassified as utility engines and help wherever they were needed. The twins have both had their fair share of incidents, though one has had less severe incidents than the other. Donald's incidents involve crashing into a signalbox and befriending a duckling. Douglas' incidents involve crushing a brakevan and rescuing an engine, his coach and brakevan from scrap. This trio turned out to be Oliver, Isabel and Toad. Other than that, like Duck, the twin's careers have been rather uneventful. They still help clear snow and pull trains on the mainline during the winter.
