Rusty is the 1st diesel on the SKR. He came to the railway to help fix the old, dilapidated track with Mr. David Hugh, the railway's foreman. He also helped Peter Sam after his accident with the slate trucks. He also helped Mr. Hugh and the men repair a washout on the line. Rusty is a kind engine but doesn't appreciate being called names. He was later joined by another diesel named Fred for maintenance work. Fred was not very reliable when he first arrived, much to Rusty's frustration. Eventually, Fred's problems were fixed, and he handled some of the maintenance work. Rusty sometimes helps handle passenger trains. He also sometimes shunts around the workshop for the SKR. Since he is the maintenance diesel, he doesn't seem to have any accidents on record. Most of the time he is out inspecting the line or pulling the odd goods train every now and then. Unlike his sister Midlander, or Madison to her friends, Rusty was never rebuilt.
