Minda woke up in the dark feeling groggy. His mind moved slow as he looked around the room.
"Kai?"
"I'm here."
Minda turned towards the sound of Kai's voice. He was sitting amongst the crates sorting through their luggage. The warm light from the fire danced across his face which felt warm and safe.
"So handsome." Minda accidentally said aloud. The unexpected comment caught Kai off guard. With reddened ears and a smug smile Kai stood up and walked towards Minda.
"MinMin, don't tempt me." Kai teased as he leaned in close.
"What... what did I do?" Minda asked, not realizing he had just spoken his thoughts aloud. A light chuckle escaped Kai's lips as he pulled Minda's chin towards him for a kiss.
"Hah... Kai." Minda gasped. All it took was one kiss to drain Minda of all his energy. Feeling listless Minda leaned into Kai's arms.
"How are you feeling?" Kai asked with his hand gently brushing across Minda's forehead.
"I'm okay."
"Hungry?"
Minda placed his hand on his stomach. He looked lost in deep thought, his brow slightly furrowed as he weighed the question in his mind.
"A little." He finally said after what seemed like a long time had passed.
"I'll warm up some soup." Kai said. Before leaving the bed Kai snuck another kiss from Minda's tender lips.
"Did I sleep through dinner?" Minda asked when he saw Kai hang a pot of soup over the fire.
"You did, but it's understandable. Traveling can be hard on the body, and you need the rest." Kai said.
"Did you get a chance to catch up with Captain Mao?"
"Not yet. I've been here and he's been in meetings with the General all day."
"You don't have to stay with me when I'm asleep. This place is supposed to be safe and... I think I might end up sleeping a lot while we're here." Minda admitted. He had only just woken up but he already felt exhausted enough to go back to sleep.
"There's no rush. We'll be here for at least two weeks."
"I thought we'd need to leave sooner."
"Once we cross the border we won't be able to stop. It's better to take our time to properly prepare here where it's safe." Kai said. He considered mentioning what the doctor said but didn't want Minda to feel responsible for the delay.
"Will our escort Kang be okay with it?"
"It won't be a problem." Kai confidently declared even though he didn't actually know how Kang would react.
"That's good. We'll be relying on him for a lot. I wouldn't want to upset him." Minda said with his body lazily leaning against the headboard.
...
Kai quickly finished warming up the soup and planned to carry it over to the bed for Minda to eat.
"I'll eat at the table." Minda said when he saw Kai head in his direction. Kai didn't object and placed the food on the table. He then moved to help Minda who was sluggishly digging himself out from under the blankets.
"Are you not eating?" Minda asked when he only saw the one bowl of soup.
"I already ate. If you have enough of an appetite I can get some barbecue meat or buns." Kai suggested hoping Minda felt well enough to eat a full meal. Minda stirred the soup with his spoon several times as he considered his appetite.
