"You couldn't help yourself, could you?." General Lei criticized with a look of disappointment. He knew the moment he saw Minda's flushed feverish face and uncomfortable sitting position what Kai had done."What I do with my husband is none of your business." Kai grumbled.
"It is when it affects the safety of my men."
"How does any of this affect you or anybody else?"
"How doesn't it? With his compromised condition you'll be worried and lose focus in battle." The General explained.
"Whether he's feverish or not my focus is always on him. It's your job to make sure we're safe even if my attention is completely focused on him."
"My job? Since when is it my job to protect you and your little soulmate?"
"Since you agreed to take me in and raise me when I was a child, father." Kai snapped before walking off to bring Minda some dinner.
"Damn spoiled brat." General Lei grumbled while secretly happy.
...
"Is everything okay?" Minda asked. He had seen Kai and the General talking and was worried something had happened again.
"Everything's fine, the old coot is just sticking his nose where it doesn't belong again." Kai said. Minda wanted to ask what he meant but lost his train thought when he saw what Kai brought back for dinner.
"What's that?" He curiously asked. On the tray was the usual soup and barbecue meat. However, there was also some type of bread that looked different from what he was used to seeing.
"It's bread. Yanlin bought it in town."
"I can see that. What's all this black stuff on it?" Minda asked.
"I don't know exactly what it is but I've been told it's seasoning or spices that were brought over through trade. Despite its black colour it tastes good." Kai said as he tore off a small piece of flatbread and gave it to him.
Minda first smelt it. He recognize some of the distinct aroma from earlier in the day but it was still a mystery. He then took a small bite of the bread with black stuff on top. At first he wasn't sure if he liked it but the more he chewed the better it seemed.
"The texture is a bit gritty because of the seasoning but the flavour is good. Kind of nutty?" Minda said a little unsure of the best way to describe it.
"If you like it I can get some more." Kai said while he handed Minda another piece.
"I think this is enough for today. There's already more food than I can finish." Minda said. He liked the bread but not enough to fill up on it.
After finishing the second piece of bread he picked up the bowl of soup to sip. Kai watched him slowly eat. He took a few sips of soup than ate a small amount of meat before stopping again.
"MinMin, are you still feeling unwell?" Kai asked as he felt Minda's forehead. It was warm but the medication seemed to be working and his fever had subsided.
"I feel fine. I'm just not that hungry." Minda said knowing why Kai was concerned. Kai was still worried but he was happy Minda was eating something even if it was only a small amount.
"I'll talk to the old coot later about having tomorrow off so we can go to the sweet shop tomorrow." Kai said. Hoping Minda's appetite would improve if it involved discovering new food.
"Are you sure he'll agree? He didn't look very happy when you were talking to him earlier." Minda asked feeling uneasy.
"Doesn't matter. If we want the day off we can take the day off." Kai said.
