"Am I not allowed inside?" Mao asked Kai with his arms crossed.
"Before you go in I want to discuss a few things with you." Kai said. Mao stared at him silently waiting to hear what he had to say.
"Minda's health isn't great and stress or anything that might upset him is not allowed."
"Are you saying my presence here will be upsetting for your husband?"
"No, but I would appreciate it if you didn't mention anything about fighting or how often I've come close to dying in the past."
"Is your husband unaware of your past?"
"He knows but I've been careful not to mention how gruesome life as a soldier can be."
"You're coddling him." Mao said with a disappointed look.
"I'm not coddling him. I'm thinking of his health." Kai said. Mao shook his head. He clearly didn't think Kai's decision was the best. Even so, he agreed to Kai's request.
"Also..."
"What? Are you going to ask me to compliment and ingratiate myself to him next?" Mao scoffed.
"I wanted to ask you to maybe smile more."
"Smile?"
"Yes, you know that thing when both corners of your mouth go up to show happiness." Kai said as he pointed to his own smiling face. Mao's frown deepened and the vein above his eye pulsated furiously.
"No."
"It won't kill you to smile."
"No."
"Mao." Kai pleaded. Mao however had no interest in smiling so he turned around to leave. Realizing he had gone too far Kai ran in front of Mao.
"Don't go."
"I'm not smiling."
"Fine."
Mao once again turned around and waited for Kai to invite him inside. Feeling nervous Kai opened the door and they went in. The hut was naturally small and they immediately found Minda sitting at on the sofa quietly waiting for them.
"MinMin, I'd like to introduce you to my childhood friend Mao." Kai said. Minda looked at the man who entered behind Kai. He was expressionless and seemed cold at first glance but Minda thought he looked rather handsome.
"Hello, I'm Chen Minda, Kai's husband." Minda stood up and politely said.
"Captain Li Mao." The man responded in a calm voice.
"Kai has told me how the two of you have known each other since you were kids."
"We have."
"That's amazing. I wish I could have known Kai when he was younger."
"..."
"I... I made lunch. It isn't anything special but Kai mentioned you like vegetables."
"It's appreciated." Mao said expressionlessly.
Minda felt a bit awkward. He was never great at socializing and it would seem Mao wasn't the type of person to carry a conversation. Not knowing what to do he looked at Kai for help.
"Why don't we sit down and eat." Kai suggested. He quickly moved to escort Minda to the table. Mao watched his dear friend walk the young man he called his husband over with his hand carefully guiding and helping him with every step.
"Please sit and enjoy." Minda said when he noticed Mao hadn't moved from the entrance. Kai also noticed his friend's behaviour and threw him an angry look. Mao rolled his eyes before silently walking over.
