Almost Is Never Enough

Chapter 85

You sat down on the couch, away from Nathan. He shot you a questioning look, but you just shrugged at him and held Jay's hand. "When should we leave?" Jay asked you.

"Probably soon, we shouldn't be late," you said.

"So like 10 minutes?" Jay asked.

"Sure," you said, resting your head on his shoulder.

"Good," Jay said, "enough time for a beer."

"Get me one," you said to Jay as he left the room.

"Got it babe," he said.

Nathan texted you.

Nath: What's up with you? Why didn't you sit next to me?

You: I don't always have to sit with you, Nath.

Nath: Well yeah of course but it seemed like you were avoiding me

You: I'm not. Just relax.

Nath: Sorry babe, I love you.

You: It's fine.

You could see that Nathan was looking at his screen, confused. You both knew that wasn't the normal response when one of you said 'I love you'. He looked over at you and frowned. You just sighed and looked away, hating how you had to do this to him. Jay came back with your beer and sat down beside you, taking a sip of his own. "Thank god for alcohol," you muttered.

"Amen sistah!" Jay said, making everyone laugh.

You smiled cheekily at him before pecking his lips, giggling a little. You couldn't see him, but Nathan looked at the two of you, jealousy all over his face. You carried on, sipping your beer and talking a little, totally ignoring that Nathan was even there. Nathan felt completely betrayed. He held back his tears though, preferring just to shoot you the occasional questioning gaze. After awhile, you gave him a small smile just to acknowledge that he was there so that he didn't suspect anything different. Nathan smiled back, but obviously wasn't satisfied.

"Shall I drive?" Siva asked, standing up.

"Yes please," you said, standing up as well.

You all filed out of the door and got into the car. You sat next to Jay and you could tell that Nathan wanted to sit next to you. You shot him another small smile, and then returned back to Jay, kissing his cheek and laughing at all of the jokes he was telling you.

Nathan was seriously jealous at you both. He looked out of the window, trying to ignore it, but was still watching out of the corner of his eye. Eventually you arrived at the courthouse and instantly tensed up at the sight of it. Everyone walked out of the car and Nathan came up next to you, taking your hand in his and squeezing it gently. He smiled at you before letting go of your hand. All of this time, Nathan had been glaring at the two of you.

Max came up behind him. "Hey mate, sorry you have to watch this."

"It's fine," Nathan muttered, even though he knew it wasn't.

"Sorry mate," Max mumbled. "She still loves you. I can tell."

"Not as much as she loves Jay though," Nathan said, walking away from Max. Max sighed, feeling bad for Nath.

Meanwhile, you were still being cute with Jay, him giving you a fake pep talk. "Okay babe, you're going to go in there..." He said, putting on his best coach face, "and do absolutely nothing. Let the lawyer do all of the work. He's the main player, you're just the substitute, the back up."

"Got it coach," you joked.

"Alright! Go get a goal-touchdown-whatever the hell it is, just get it! The only thing you shouldn't get is lawsuit!" Jay joked. You laughed at him. "Now are you ready?!" Jay said in his coach voice.

"I was born ready coach!" You said, laughing.

"Okay, court on three. 1, 2, 3, COURT!" Jay yelled, making you burst into a fit of giggles. Jay wrapped an arm around you as you did the same, walking into the courthouse.

Nathan looked at the two of you. "That doesn't hurt at all," he mumbled.
