Almost Is Never Enough

Chapter 122

You sat down in the cafeteria and waited as one of the people working brought you your food. "Sorry, but I have to ask," she said, "how much can you eat?"

"Not much," you said. She nodded and gave you a small bowl of soup and some soda. "Thank you," you said.

She smiled and left, leaving you sitting alone. You sighed and started eating. Eventually, someone sat next to you. "Hey," they said. You looked over to see a blonde, very familiar face.

"Vanessa?" You said, shocked.

She smiled at you. "Yeah, I'd be shocked to see me too," she said.

"What are you doing here?" You asked, still in shock.

Vanessa then lifted her wrist for you to see. "Because of these," she said.

"Holy..." You mumbled.

"Yeah I know. I've got them too," she said.

"I'm sorry..." You said.

"Don't be. I'm here now. Things can only get better," she smiled.

You smiled at her. "Does Max know about this?" You asked.

"No...he doesn't," Vanessa said. You nodded and returned to your food. "I'm guessing Jay knows," she said.

"Yeah...he's seen me do it too," you said.

She nodded and bit her lip. "Even if I wanted to tell him, it's not like I could," Vanessa said.

"Yeah..." You said, "how's it going with the two of you?"

"Well I did meet him at the bar and he seemed pretty nice," Vanessa said.

"And I'm guessing you went to your house afterward..." You joked.

"No. I don't do that after a first date," she said.

"Yeah but Max does," you laughed.

"Not with me he won't. I'd rather wait it out for a little while. Make sure I know it's right," Vanessa said.

"I never thought sex fiend Max would agree to that." You said.

"He's gonna have to if he wants me to be his girlfriend," Vanessa said.

You laughed. "Hey he's not that bad at it..." You said.

"How would your know?" Vanessa asked.

"Oh um..." You said, blushing at your mistake.

"You can tell me," Vanessa said.

"Look we were drunk and stuff happened...we didn't go all the way but got pretty damn close..." You said, blushing at the memory.

"Oh..." Vanessa said awkwardly.

"Yeah...and that's basically why I'm here." You said.

"So you're saying Max caused all of this?" Vanessa asked.

"No, it was my fault. I've cheated on Jay before, but this time threw me over the edge. I ran away and got so close to overdosing, but I couldn't open the fucking bottle," you said bitterly.

"You've cheated on Jay? But you're practically perfect for each other! I saw how you looked at each other when I was your waitress," Vanessa said.

"Yeah well I'm an idiot when I'm drunk, and things are complicated between us and this guy Nathan..." You said.

"What do you mean by complicated?" Vanessa asked.
