Almost Is Never Enough

Chapter 86

Everyone piled into the courthouse and took their seats. You and Jay sat in the chairs next to your lawyer. Everyone gave you proud and encouraging looks as Jay held your hand. All of a sudden, Veronica, a couple security guards, and her lawyer walk into the room. Your eyes widened at her and you subtly began shaking.

"Beautiful, calm down," Jay whispered, squeezing your hand for comfort. You nodded your head repeatedly, but you still couldn't stop shaking as Veronica was throwing death glares your way. Somehow, you ended up sitting on Jay's lap, him comforting you and running his fingers through your hair. You were breathing pretty hard, trying to calm yourself down. Jay wrapped his arms around you. "Lovely, she can't hurt you, I swear. I won't let her." Jay whispered.

"Okay..." You faintly whispered, getting off his lap before the session started.

"Order," the judge called. "Now, we're here today on the case of Veronica Hastings allegedly poisoning and attempt at murder," the judge said. "The plaintiff may present their case."

"I would like to call Veronica Hastings up to the stand your honor," your lawyer had said, standing up. Security escorted her up and Jay squeezed your hand comfortingly.

"Do you swear to speak the truth, nothing but the truth so help you God?" They had asked her.

"I do," she said.

"Alright Miss Hastings, you are being persecuted for poisoning James McGuiness, would you care to explain to us why you had done such a thing?" Your lawyer asked.

"I didn't do it," she said.

"If you had not done so, then why were your fingerprints found in James' room where he had found the poisoned food?" He asked.

"They must've been planted there," she said adamantly, still giving you death glares.

"I'm sorry to tell you this Veronica, but it is not humanly possible to place fingerprints anywhere without doing it personally," your lawyer said.

"Well it didn't happen." She said.

"Let's choose a different topic. What was your relationship with James?" Your lawyer asked.

"We were dating for a few weeks before he broke up with me," Veronica said.

"Why did you two separate?" Your lawyer asked.

"I think that it's because of her," Veronica said, sending you another death glare. "I think she forced us to break up so that she could have Jay all to herself."

"I object!" Jay said loudly.

"On what behalf?" The judge asked.

"She didn't force me to break up with Veronica. I broke up with Veronica on my own terms," Jay said.

The judge nodded his head and focused his attention back on Veronica who was clearly pissed off. "Miss Hastings, anything to add?" He asked.

"Well what I know is that he had broken up with me as soon as she turned up," Veronica said. The judge nodded his head.

"So was shooting her and poisoning James for revenge?" Your lawyer asked.

"I didn't do that," she insisted.

"We found your fingerprints in their flat and located the gun," your lawyer said, raising his voice slightly. "If you didn't do this, tell us who did."

Veronica bit her lip for a second. "Well?" Your lawyer asked.

"All I know is that I didn't do it. It may have been my fingerprints, but I have no recollection of it," Veronica said.
