Many words can be used to describe the loss of a child. Words like pain, guilt and unimaginable spring to mind. James Barnes never thought that they'd be words that could describe his emotions about his child. Yet here he is, the empty shell of the man he'd came back to be. It was like square one again, only without his guide through it all. Through the past 3 weeks, Bucky had only one word on his mind.
regret.

You push yourself off of the ground with a pained groan. You sway as you put up your fists, preparing to go down guns blazing. It was a suicide mission from the beginning, everyone but you didn't have the guts to accept it. The way everything was set up, it all stuck out to you for all the wrong reasons. And as much as you don't want to accept it, you know you're getting the short end of the stick. A take down on about 20 covert HYDRA agents against a team of 7 Avengers was never bound to be a winning battle. As you come around, you try to think of the best way to do this without getting everyone else hurt. You come up a plan, not the best, but it's a plan nonetheless. But as you go to put your plan into action, everyone on your team stands up and initiates a fight between a rival member. It appears to be working, you're finally winning. Maybe you knew wrong, that it actually isn't a suicide mission. But you were foolish, naive, to think lady luck was ever on your side. You see a red dot floating around the place, and your heart stops when you see it aimed on your dad's chest. This, this is the suicide mission. You waste no time in running through the battle and towards your dad. He sees you coming and looks at you with a confused look on his face. You look at him sadly and you hear a shot ring out as you push him out of the way. Everything goes in slow motion. The bullet enters and exits straight through your stomach. At first, the feeling is a pleasant kind of burning, then it soon enough turns to intense pain as the bullet rips apart your insides. The crimson colour of your blood seeps out and onto your suit, creating a stain that'll be engraved on your fathers brain for as long as he'll ever remember. He cries out your name and he acts quickly, spotting your shooter and taking him down with a bullet to the head. Bucky runs towards you and catches you as you start falling to your knees.
"D-Dad?" You say quietly, your eyes darting back and forth between the rest of the team and then back to your dad.
"I'm here baby, I'm here" He says, moving the loose strands of hair out of your face.
"D-Dad, it hurts" You groan. Bucky looks at you sadly and he puts pressure on your wound. You cry out in pain and plead for him to stop.
"Daddy please stop! It hurts!" You cry. Bucky holds back tears. Everything amounts to nothing when it's a time like this. When you began coughing up blood, you knew your time was fading. "Dad, l-look at me" You say. "it's okay, I'm okay" You reassure him. He squeezes your hand and shakes his head.
"Y/n stop saying this, you're going to be okay" He says adamantly. You shake your head.
"You need to promise me something" You say. Bucky nods. "T-Tell Peter, I love him, please?" You say weakly, all color drained from your face.
"Yeah, anything for you doll" He tells you.
"I l-love you, dad" You say.
"I love you too sweetheart" He says. His heart breaks completely in two when your chest stops rising and falling. Everything stops.
"Y-Y/n?" He says, his voice near enough nothing. Everything goes the loud kind of silence. Everyone watches in sadness as Bucky cries over your unresponsive body. Everyone lost that day, but Bucky especially. He picks up your body and carries you back to the jet, having your head laid on his lap as he sings you the lullaby he'd always sing to when you were a baby. The ride back feels unbearably long for everyone, but the feeling of overwhelming dread comes over them when Bucky has to carry your body off of the jet. The team that didn't go out on the missions faces warp to one of sadness, especially Peters. Peter sees your body in your fathers arms and he almost immediately runs over to you and looks up at the super soldier in front of him. Peter looks up at Bucky, having a silent conversation. Bucky nods hesitantly, still not accepting it. Peter goes into shock and hits the floor.
