Kurapika POV
I took a bit of my food. Everyone was talking except for me, I didn't know how to involve myself in the conversation.
"Why don't you say something Sunshine." Leorio whispered to me and nudged my arm. I shook my head, "No, I don't know what to say." Leorio put his arm around my shoulder, "Okay. I won't force you to say anything."
I smiled and put my head on his shoulder in return.
Leorio's mom laughed at something her sister said before turning her attention to me, "Kurapika." I looked up at her and raised an eyebrow, "Yes ma'am?"
She giggled, "You can just call me Maria."
"Oh, sorry Maria." She smiled, "It's okay, but I do have a question for you." I took my head off of Leorio, "Oh okay." I was a bit nervous but she seemed like a nice person, hard to get angry.
She took a sip of her drink, "Are you religious?"
"Uhh..." I looked up at Leorio and he just shrugged. I cleared my throat and looked back at her, "Um not really no, but I do take part of the Kurta culture."
Leorio's mom was about to say something before his dad interrupted, "So you don't believe in God?"
Leorio took his arm off me and sat up, "No he doesn't, and I'm completely fine with that."
His dad sighed, "For goodness sake Leorio you're a catholic. So you should marry someone else who is catholic, more or less a woman who is catholic."
"I wanted to marry him for a reason dad. Which before you ask is none of your concern, all you need to know is that I love him."
"What about a job? Does he have a job?"
Leorio put his arm back around me, "For the moment I have money under control, I'm a doctor. If he wants a job he can get one that's fine with me."
"What about kids?"
"I don't want kids, plus you have four other kids to carry on this bloodline."
His dad shook his head, "Okay, well what about his family? Are they okay with that?" I looked at him, "My family is dead. They were all murdered years ago, so I actually don't know but I would expect that they would be happy with my decisions, about my life, that they have no control over. I would ask you to not care about your son's life decisions but I don't have control over you like you don't have control over your son. I need you to mind your damn business about our life."
The room fell into an awkward silence. Of course after that awkward moment we all began to eat again.
Leorio's uncle sighed and set down his fork then looked at Leorio, "Sobrino, is there a treatment for cancer?"
"Am I in your will?"
"Yes."
"Sadly not."
That comment broke the silence with laughter. Leorio's dad ended up eating in his bedroom while the rest of us went into the living room.
After dinner we all went into the living room to talk.
Rose sat on the couch with me and Leorio. I knew she wanted to talk to us but couldn't. Rosed sighed as the room erupted in laughter. She looked at Leorio and tapped his shoulder, a few seconds after that they walked away into a different room.
I sighed and watched them walk off. A few minutes later Leorio came back with a frustrated look on his face.
"What did you talk about?"
"Nothing, now what's going on."
"I honestly don't know, most of it was in Spanish."
Leorio chuckled, "Okay I'll figure it out."
The rest of the night we all talked and joked around. I helped Leorio's mom make dessert (which was chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream, we didn't make the ice cream just the cake) and for the first time in years I actually felt like I was part of a family, and a good one too.
