Chapter Fifty-Five

Cassie called Sophie the next morning. She hadn't heard anything from anyone. And if she was being honest, the guilt was fucking killing her inside. When she got home from the hospital, Lexi tried talking to her but she just cried in the bathroom for what felt like hours. She felt so fucking guilty.

And it wasn't because she slept with Nate.

It was because she caught feelings for Nate, fast and hard.

"Hey, Cass." Sophie's cheery voice answered,

"Uh, hey, how are you?"

"Um, I'm good, thanks for asking. How are you?"

"I'm okay." Cassie paused for a moment, "How's Nate?"

"He's been better."

"But he's alright?"

"Yeah, he's been good. Really good." Cassie could hear the smile in Sophie's voice and she felt tears stinging her eyes.

"That's so good. I'm really glad to hear. Is he still in the hospital?"

"Yeah, they think he'll be discharged soon though."

"Oh, good."

"Uh, actually while I have you on the phone, I just wanted to tell you something."

Cassie was terrified. What if she was telling her she knew? Did Nate say something? Was this it?

"Cass? You still there?"

"Oh, yeah, sorry."

"I just wanted to thank you again, for helping out the other night. I couldn't, we couldn't have done it without you guys. And I'm glad you pitched in to help Nate after everything that's happened."

"Oh, it's uh, no problem. I'm always hear to help."

"I know, Cass. Look, I've gotta go, but I'll see you in a few days at school."

"Yeah, can't wait." Cassie said, trying to sound cheerful as she hung up the phone.

And she cried again.

Everything was fucked up.

And she needed to talk to Nate.

Meanwhile, Sophie continued to visit Nate in the hospital until the day he was released. And little did she know, his dad was trying to figure out who was at that party and who witnessed Nate being beaten.

"We know that Sophie was there, along with Madeline Perez." Cal said, scratching his chin.

"I'm sure Brenda said that Cassie Howard and Christopher McKay were with them at the hospital. And I don't doubt that Lexi Howard, Cassie's sister, and Sophie's best friend was there as well." Marsha said as Cal nodded.

"Looks like we have some people to talk to."

"I just don't get why they aren't saying anything. Especially Sophie."

"I know she had just wanted to wait until Nate was out of the hospital, which I understand, but we need to hold this guy responsible for what he did to our son."

"Our underage son, especially."

"Exactly."

Now, Marsha had reached out to some of the girls. Maddy, didn't reply. She had the same response from Sophie. And as for the Howard sisters, well, she received that they didn't see anything.
