Chapter Seventy-Eight

When Rue showed up knocking at Sophie's door on the following Tuesday evening, she knew something was wrong. Mind you, it probably wasn't the best day for her to show up. Why? Lexi, Maddy and Nate were over. Discussing Cassie.

"Oh, uh, hey Rue?" Sophie said, surprised to see her standing outside, "Um, did you need something? Are you good?"

"Yeah, no, yeah, I think I just have a cold or something, uh, can I come in?"

"Sure, just please don't get me sick." Sophie said, stepping aside as Rue quickly came into the house.

"I can't, I can't get you sick."

"Okay, well, colds are contagious, so-"

"Yeah, I realize that, but it's just, it's not that kind of thing. Can I use your bathroom, please?"

And that's when Lexi, Maddy and Nate came to the foyer.

"Rue? Hi." Lexi said with a smile as she gave her a quick hug.

"Oh hi."

"Hey Rue!" Maddy said, wrapping her arms around her.

"Please don't try to hug me." Rue said to Nate and he laughed slightly.

"I won't."

And Brenda came down the stairs, "Hey Rue. Oh jeez, are you feeling okay?"

"Yeah."

"You look terrible. I mean, really terrible." Brenda said, as Sophie and Lexi exchanged a look.

Withdrawal.

The intervention.

Fuck.

"Yeah, I think I just have like a cold or something."

"Well, don't get me sick! Or Sophie!" Brenda said, glancing at the girl, "But otherwise, are you doing okay?"

"Uh yeah."

"How's your mom? I was thinking about her the other day."

"She's good."

"And how's your sister? Little Gia. Probably not so little anymore."

Truth be told, Brenda delivered both Rue and Gia.

Just being a family doctor in a small town meant you've practically delivered like everyone.

And she had.

"Yeah, good."

"You staying clean?"

Definitely not.

"Yeah."

"Yeah? Being a good girl?"

"Mhm."

"How long have you been clean for?"

"Um, since the summer time." Rue said, glancing at Lexi then back at Brenda.

Lexi and Sophie exchanged another glance behind eyes back and Sophie widened her eyes at Lexi to which, Lexi nodded.

They were both thinking the same thing.

Why was she here?

Who was she hiding from?

And, was she looking for pills?

"You're in NA, right?"

"Yeah."

"And how's that?"

"It's good. Yeah, it's good."
