Sophie Peters had been friends with Nate Jacobs for as long as she could remember. Their parents became best friends in high school and were still tied at the hip today, meaning that the Peters and Jacobs families had always been close. Her dad worked alongside Cal Jacobs at their construction firm until he died when she was 12 because of a car accident.
Her mom, Brenda, was a doctor and spent almost every day at the hospital, keeping herself busy and it had been this way since her father passed. The two of them were extremely close, close enough for Sophie to be able to talk to her about all the high school drama and everything happening with Nate. She had other high school friends too - like Lexi & Cassie Howard, Kat Hernandez and Maddy Perez, but she always got along with Lexi a lot better than the others.
Maddy and Nate had been dating on and off since junior year and all she ever heard was Maddy complaining about Nate and Nate complaining about Maddy. Yeah, he's a dick and manipulative, controlling, selfish and the list could go on, but only Sophie was able to see the soft side of him when he let her. Anytime the "perfect" pair were having a fight or were on a break, Nate would come running to Sophie, and for the last 6 months, they had been friends with benefits.
Sophie felt used at times from her best friend, but she tried to push it aside by distracting herself by hanging out with Lexi or getting extremely drunk at parties. She never did drugs, not that alcohol was any better, but after seeing Rue Bennett overdose time and time again, she wanted to stay as far away from drugs as she could. However, almost all of her other friends were always high on something.
Nate, on the other hand, has always had a special place in his heart for Sophie. There was always something about her that made him weak. Maddy had never made him feel the way that Sophie did. He never admitted that he was in love with the girl, but some people could just tell.
