Heart pounding, Stephen Mulhern stood on the stage ready to perform his famed magic performance on a live audience that included his friends, Ant and Dec. Stephen felt the stress of everyone's expectations pressing down on him, and the pressure was on.
When he performed his act, something didn't feel quite right. Stephen's hands shook, his mind racing. He strained and struggled till he reached the main point of the trick and fumbled. The crowd let out a gasp of surprise, and Stephen felt his heart drop.
Stephen turned to face Ant and Dec, who were at him confused and worried way, during that moment of fear and humiliation. He was aware that he had let them down, and the idea of disappointing friends was too much for him to handle.
Stephen came over to Ant and Dec, head hung low, a lump in his throat and a heavy heart. He managed to utter, "I'm so sorry," just above a raspy cough. Dec and Ant exchanged a look, knowing in their eyes.
Stephen's head spun and the world around him darkened before he could say anything else. He sensed his own descent, the ground hurriedly moving to take hold of him. His final visual cue before complete darkness came was the concerned expressions of Ant and Dec hovering over him.
When Stephen did eventually gain consciousness, he was resting on a couch backstage with Ant and Dec sitting next to him with a wet towel covering his forehead. Their faces were gentle with worry, but they seemed relieved to see him awake.
Stephen said, "I'm so sorry," again, but with more intensity this time. "I wanted everything to be perfect, but I messed up."
Dec and Ant shook their heads, their smiles comforting and warm. Ant responded, "Don't worry about that, Stephen." "You always give it your all, as we know. We're just relieved that you're alright.
"Thanks."Stephen said closing his eyes again, resting his head on the back of the couch.
Ant and Dec shared glances before pulling Stephen up who let out a grunt."Were going home Stevie, you need proper rest."Ant spoke before guiding the way out of the room.
"Do I have choice."
"Nope."
"Why did I bother asking."Stephen mumbled to himself, while he dragged to a car.
