Hey everyone! If you read my Q&A, you might remember that I mentioned being curious about which characters my readers find the most popular and which ones are the least. After thinking about it for a while, I decided to officially hold this popularity test.
To make it fair, I created a specific set of rules for how I counted everything:
First rule:
I used the different one-shots I've written to determine each character's popularity and looked at the votes/likes those one-shots received.
Second rule:
If a character has multiple one-shots centered around them, I only counted the most voted/liked one-shot. All characters included in this list have at least one one-shot, so to keep things fair, only one one-shot per character is used.
Third rule:
If a one-shot focused on multiple characters at once — like the college AU or something like Tony and Steve fighting over Y/N's love — it does not count. Because the focus is split between characters, it's difficult to determine which character readers favored more.
With that explained, here is the context behind the data I collected. What started out as a fun popularity contest to see which characters readers enjoy the most eventually led me to discover something a little more concerning. I'll explain what that is at the end of the list.
I will also show how many votes each one-shot received, as well as which one-shot it came from. Trust me, this will be important later.
And just for clarity — I mention the movies a lot more than comics or cartoons. This is because most casual audiences are more familiar with the movie versions of these characters. I wanted to mention this before someone comments something like, "X character had more screentime in X cartoon than in X movie."
#19. Ultron – 13 votes
"Ultron and You Are the Only Beings in the World"
I'm honestly not surprised that Ultron ended up last on the list. To be completely honest, I only wrote this one because it was a request. It was fun to write, but it was still a request rather than something I planned myself.
Besides that, Ultron doesn't have the husband/waifu appeal that other robots in different shows or video games tend to have — like Aigis from Persona 3 or 2B from Nier: Automata.
On top of that, he's the main villain of Age of Ultron, and I think the main heroes are generally far more popular than the villains, with the possible exceptions of characters like Thanos or Loki.
In short, I'm not shocked that he placed this low.
#18. Loki – 34 votes
"Loki & His Family Appearing as a 'Normal' Family"
Now this is a character I was genuinely surprised to see ranked so low. As far as I know, people love Loki — and I mean really love him. People adore his looks, his personality, and his overall character arc.
It also helps that he's a villain-turned–anti-hero, which is pretty uncommon in the MCU, and of course there's always an appeal to attractive bad guys.
Like I said earlier, I have a theory about why he — and a few other characters — ended up lower than expected, but I'll explain that later.
#17. Bruce Banner – 38 votes
"Bruce Getting Jealous of Tony Flirting With His Husband"
I want to say I'm surprised Bruce is this low, but honestly, I don't hear many people talk about Bruce Banner as Bruce Banner. Most of the time, people focus on Bruce as the Hulk instead.
