It felt like an eternity, and yet it also felt like yesterday—the day he and Y/N saved the United States and sacrificed themselves on that plane. They thought they had died, and so did the rest of the world. Yet everything had changed.
Waking up in a familiar room, Steve Rogers was in disbelief that he was alive and well. Everything seemed recognizable: the radio, the bed, the décor, the nurse's clothing—everything. However, there was one error: the radio. With that small slip-up, he realized what it really was.
A sham.
Thus, escaping the room, he discovered a whole new world. A city he once knew now transformed into one of the largest in the world. Searching for answers, he was left with more questions.
Arriving at Times Square, the confused man looked around, taking everything in—the moving billboards, the advanced cars, the unfamiliar clothing. Everything was different, almost like he was in an entirely different world.
And then came Nick Fury—the man who had all the answers to his questions. Steve had many: what happened to the U.S., his fellow soldiers, and what this modern world was. Fury gave a general explanation and eventually convinced him to continue the conversation somewhere more suitable.
Once they arrived at the SHIELD base, Fury explained everything and answered nearly all of Steve's questions. Apparently, SHIELD had a theory that the reason Steve survived was because of the super soldier serum. It allowed his body temperature to remain stable while his vital organs stayed in a suspended state. Meanwhile, the ice acted as a form of stasis, meaning no food was required for him to survive.
However, there was one thing he needed to know.
"There was another man who was with me on the plane." Steve said. "Right beside me."
"Oh, you mean Y/N." Fury replied.
Steve looked up, hopeful. "Did he make it?"
"He woke up before you." Fury said. Steve immediately leaned forward, eager to hear more. "He should be outside, taking a stroll."
With a goal in mind, Steve excused himself and went outside. Moving quickly, he jogged out of the SHIELD base into the open air.
Taking in the sunny weather, he looked around.
It took around three minutes for Steve to spot a familiar figure. Near a fountain, there was a bench. With his back turned, he saw the man he was looking for. Flinching slightly, he took a deep breath before walking toward him.
Y/N was focused on a mobile phone, trying to figure out how it worked, and didn't even notice Steve approaching. Captain America observed that his husband was wearing more modern clothing—and it suited him well.
"Y/N."
The soldier flinched and quickly looked up in shock. "Steve...?" He stood up immediately, taking a moment to check Steve over before hugging him.
Steve hugged him back. "You survived... thank God..."
"I thought that was it for us..." Y/N admitted with a heavy breath before stepping back.
Steve was still in disbelief. Y/N gave a small smile. "Let's sit down." He patted the bench, and Steve sat beside him.
For a moment, Steve simply looked at him. Silence settled between them, broken only by the sound of the fountain behind them.
"You alright?" Y/N asked.
"I'm... still in disbelief that all of this is happening." Steve replied, looking around. Then he noticed something. "What's that?"
