As everyone was having breakfast the next morning, Adam had a thought. He grinned at his spouses and suggested they have a cook out and go swimming. Their next-door neighbor, Barbara Jean and her husband Cameron, had mentioned something about getting together sometime soon. Tim nodded his approval since he had a mouthful of scrambled eggs. Ama said she'd start a list of what they'd need and would head to the store if one of the guys would invite whoever to the get-together.
"We're gonna go swimming?" Cerise questioned with wide eyes.
"Yes, Princess. We're finally gonna break in that beautiful pool in the back yard." Adam ruffled her hair.
"We're also inviting some of our neighbors over for a cook-out." Tim said after swallowing his food.
"Ya!" Cerise threw her hands in the air, eyes crinkling at edges, making everyone laugh.
"I'll help ya with that list once we're done cleaning the kitchen, ok?" Tim glanced over at their wife.
Adam had made breakfast that morning. Tim offered to clean up, so their wife could get to making the list of everything they'd need for their little cook out. She scribbled out things she knew they definitely needed and every now and then would tap the pen to her bottom lip. Tim would look over at her and couldn't help but smile at her. 'She really has grown into herself over the past two years.' he mused to himself. Once he was done with the kitchen, and got the dishwasher going, he sat down next to her.
"Charcoal, hamburger & hotdog buns for sure. Maybe more tomatoes and onions. I believe we have enough hamburger meat to make our own burgers." Tim looked out into their backyard.
"Can you think of anything else? Sodas? Tea? Sugar? Should I pick up paper plates?" She turned her head towards his to see him smiling at his own thoughts.
"Hmm? Oh. Yeah. We may need more tea but I think we're good on sugar. Lemonade might be nice instead of sodas. Grab a couple packs of beer for anyone who wants some." He turned to look at her, making her smile at him.
"This is going to be a nice afternoon, baby." She reached over and took ahold of his hand.
"Oh, I know. I just remember what you looked like the last time we had a cook out by the pool." Tim's eyes twinkled as he spoke, "You nearly killed me and Adam!"
"Mmmm. That was a pretty fun afternoon, wasn't it?" She giggled as she thought back to that fun afternoon, "I never believed then that I'd have the life I have now. Especially with you two."
"What do you mean?" His brows furrowed together.
"Come on. You're both drop dead gorgeous. Funny. Smart. Incredibly talented. Ambitious. Have I mentioned how smokin' hot you both are? I figured you'd get bored with some naïve kid like me and leave me broken-hearted for someone more mature and worldly. Someone who was more on your level than I was." She looked out into their backyard.
"Baby, we saw you that first time and I know Adam immediately fell in love. You were, and are, so unique that we had to get to know you. And don't for one second believe that you're not all of the things you just called us. You're all of that and more, Amarelle." He squeezed her hand, "Don't ever forget what you did for us when we were going through the craziness of our exes. How you dropped everything to pick up and take Cerise down to Texas. Not many people would do that for a child that wasn't theirs. You have a heart bigger than the Texas sky, Sugar Plum."
"Sweetie, can I ask that you pick up a bathing suit for Cerise? The one she has is too small now." Adam walked into the dining room not realizing the heavy conversation that had been going on.
"Sure. Can you think of anything else that we need for this cook out?" She slid what she'd written down already over to him to look over.
"Hmm. How about some chicken too? Even if we don't eat all of it today, can't we freeze it for later?" Adam looked between his lovers.
