Chapter 61: Heartfelt Reunion

"Uzumaki..." Naruto heard someone call his name as he stood in a field of flowers, cherry blossoms dancing through the air from the trees they blew out from.

Everything was a light pink all around him.

"Nia..." He took a step forward as he could see the kunoichi from a distance while she had her back facing him.

The wind softly blew at her hair and clothing as she slowly looked over her shoulder, a warm smile evident on her face.

"Come on, baby, let's go," She spoke.

"Nia!" Naruto, again, took a few more steps forward.

Nia only responded with a soft voice, "What's wrong? Don't you wanna be together forever?"

"I do... I wanna be with you more than anything."

"Then... let's go, okay?" She held out her hand for him. "Together..."

"Kuh!" Tears fell from Naruto's eyes as he sprung forward, running toward the girl's direction.

However, when he did, it seemed as though he was making no progress toward her. He was just moving in place.

'W-What's going on?' He thought as this happened. 'My feet are moving, but Nia only seems to get further and further away from me. There's no end to this!'

Soon, Nia's smile would fade away as she waited for him... then waited some more.

"Nia, I'm coming! Please! Just stay there!" Naruto reached his arm out as he continued to sprint.

However, when she did, there was a dark figure that stood behind her. They had a kunai in hand, ready to pierce her heart.

The sky suddenly turned bloody red as the flowers melted and Naruto found himself running atop of blood instead.

He screamed once he saw the masked man ready to strike the girl down.

"NIA!" Naruto suddenly sat up after having had been lying down a bed the entire time.

His eyes were wide and he panted heavily.

"You're finally awake," Kakashi was next to him in a hospital room, sitting in a chair beside his student's bed.

"Kakashi-sensei..." Naruto looked over to his left. "I don't get it... Where am I?"

"In the hospital, silly." The man replied.

"But..."

A flashback hit him as Nia's corpse was lying in his arms, bloodied and beaten.

"N-No..." A tear traced down his cheek as everything came back to him.

Grief... It felt like emptiness in Naruto's heart, a shear of nothingness that somehow took over and held his soul and threatened to kill him entirely. It gave him a heavy feeling that was like the weight of the world was resting on his shoulders and there was nothing he could do to get out from under it.

It was like this hole in his heart that was the shape of the one he lost and that made him feel the need to wipe away any non-existent tears that he wanted to form but couldn’t.
