The most heartbreaking words
I ever heard leave my mothers lips
Were
"I hope to see you making happy art one day
I understand that's hard now
For without happiness
How can you express it?"

She told me the stormy seas inside of my body
Raged inside of her still
She felt the ever growing weight
I felt on my own two shoulders

The most heartbreaking words
I ever heard leave my mothers lips
Were
"I'm so sorry
That you ended up like me"

As if I would want to be
Like anyone else?
The bravery inside her deep brown eyes
The mental sharpness and compassion
For her two young children
So outwardly expressed
And even more
For the next two

The most heartbreaking words
I ever heard leave my mothers lips
Were
"My angel tattoo
Has a meaning
She is facing away from all
Leaving behind
All that she once knew"

I could feel
My stomach sink to my feet
For she understood more than anyone
What it was to walk away

The most heartbreaking words
I ever heard leave my mothers lips
Were
"I wish
I would have know all of this
Sooner
So maybe
I could have helped"

A mother's love
Can be measured only
In the compassion and love
They show their child
The first hands to hold me
Up to the light
To see the smile she passed on to you
And the pain she endured to bring me life
Even if that life is a constant struggle

For she knew
She knew what a life would be offered
She had experienced much herself
But as I see the puzzle pieces of her
Fixated within myself
Inside the gears of my very structure
My eyes glisten with envy
Maybe she's why I always wanted brown eyes
