My deepest fear
Lies between what I'm shown
And what I've truly witnessed
Because growing up in a broken home
Warps and stretches the mind
The perception of love and care
The way two should care for the other
And the way one should care for their self
Because how can you know love
When your education on it
Came from a series of romance books
And stories on the internet
How can you accept love
And deny hate
When any sort of attention
Felt like it would slip away
Like sand between your fingers
And I was so scared
Because I knew your words
My mother recognized their nature
And they say we always
End up like our parents
But I think we end up similarly
Because no matter how much
We can try to avoid disaster
Disaster is all we know
A broken home
A shattered heart
And long nights spent
With eyes blood shot from tears
The smell of alcohol seeping into the couch
The sound of distant screams
Are all we know
And how can you truly learn differently
When we don't know it
