Chapter 71

P.O.V/ Kim Austin:

Four Months later..

Summer has flown by so fast with Kyle and I both working. I worked at the bank as a bank teller. Kyle worked on a huge construction job all summer they built some kind of office building downtown. We saved up a lot of money and bought some new things like a new Television set. It's one of those Sharp TVs with a remote and a bigger screen. We also bought a new VHS player cause the one we had was old and it stopped working. It was Kyle's he had since he was ten when VHS came out in 1977. The Summer was good for most of us... David was buried at Holbrook Cemetery on May 3rd. It is ten minutes away from Finway High. We've all taken David's death hard but James and Debby have taken it the hardest... James was his cousin and Debby blames herself for what happened at Kelly's mansion. She told Kelly after the funeral she should have saved David.. that she saved the wrong person... Debby has fallen into a depression over it and has been seeing a therapist but she can't come out and tell the whole truth about what happened. Debby has also been chain-smoking she has been smoking since she was sixteen. I've begged Mom to stop smoking in fear that she will start chain smoking one day. Today is Monday August 3, 1987 it's our first day as Sophomores in College and you know what that means. All new classes, Professors, and a new semester. I'm in Honors Calculus with Kyle and Kat we are listening to our new Professor talk. It's a woman this time she's white and is about my Mom's age. Mom just turned thirty-seven in July. There were a lot of birthdays over the past four months. Kyle turned nineteen in May, Jason also turned nineteen but in July, Jane and Mandi turned twenty in June. Mandi's birthday was June 2nd and Jane's was the 20th They are eighteen days apart. As Professor Gaines talks the door opens. I look over at Heather walking in with an evil grin. She walks up the first set of steps and to the back row of chairs behind us. I'm sitting in the middle between Kat and Kyle. He's on my right and she's on my left. I feel someone staring at me so I look back at Heather sitting directly behind my chair. She smiles evilly as she writes on a piece of notebook paper on the wooden desk attached to the chair she's sitting in. I roll my eyes and turn my head back looking down at Professor Gaines. I feel something land in my lap I look down at a folded-up piece of notebook paper on my blue jeans. I pick it up and open it. It says you and Kyle look so hot today... I love Kyle's farmer tan it has a winking face beside it. I scoff as I crumble up the piece of paper tossing it over my shoulder I raise my hand back flipping her a bird. I suddenly feel her breathing down the back of my neck. Heather whispers in my ear creepily " You're gonna regret what you did.. all of you are"... I ignore her and continue listening. She whispers in my ear " Too bad that loser was in the way.. Kelly just had to be a traitor and save that pathetic witch"... I stand up and turn around staring down at her with a pissed-off expression as she grins evilly crossing her leg. Professor Gaines says " Miss is there a problem?" I look back at Professor Gaines and then at Heather. She says to me with sarcasm " Is there?" I turn around and sit back down. Professor Gaines continues talking. Kat and Kyle both give Heather dirty looks as I shake my leg up and down cause I'm mad. The class was over at 10:00 a.m. Heather didn't bother me anymore. But as we stood up Heather said to me " I'd love to be those jeans you're wearing". I roll my eyes and turn around looking up at Heather as she stands there behind our row of chairs. Kat puts her arm around me and said to Heather " Back off bitch she's mine". Kat is totally joking just to mess with Heather. She looks at us with suspicion. She said to Kat with sarcasm " Yeah right.. you expect me to believe you are into girls? I know you're straight as a board". Kat said as she kept playing along " I was pretending besides my boyfriend knows and is cool with it". Heather looks at Kyle who is in on the joke. Heather said to him " I thought Kim couldn't have any more girlfriends?" Kyle said, " That's really none of your business". Heather is jealous but still suspicious. She said, " I know you guys are lying". I said, " You don't know that". Kat said, " Besides it's not like Kim hasn't bagged a straight girl before". I feel my face blush at the thought of her mentioning Jane. Heather rolls her eyes as she storms off down the steps and out of the classroom. Kat still has her arm around me and I look at her. I said playfully " Kat is there something you wanna tell us?" Kat says playfully in a silly voice " I've always had the hots for you Kim". She said with a wink as we giggled. I jokingly lean in for a kiss catching her off guard and she squeals in surprise. We all three bust out laughing as Kat's face blushed. Kyle said joking " Well that proves you don't like chicks". We all three are giggling. Good thing I can joke with Kat like that and her not think that I meant it.
