Chapter 16

P.O.V/ Kim Austin:

It's been five days since Kelly's birthday party, where Natalie showed up with Patrick, Tiffany, and Stephanie, wrecking it and resurrecting Ashley Grant from the grave. Today is Friday, February 11, 1983; I'm standing on the porch waiting for Kelly to come pick me up from school. I see her car pull up and stop in front of my house. I check to make sure the door is locked, and I head down there. I open the door and step inside, shutting it behind me. I put my seatbelt on, and Kelly smiles at me as she shifts into drive, then into first gear, easing off the clutch as she builds up speed. As she drives down Woodland Avenue, she says, "So there is a movie playing at the drive-in on Sunday called The Invisible Woman." I said, "Sounds spooky." I said with a smile. Kelly said as she drove, " It's a science fiction film, so it probably will be. But that's okay, you seem to hold onto me a lot when we watch scary movies." She winks at me, and I blush at her. I said " So there's a Valentine's day dance coming up on Monday I heard something about the teachers doing an assembly where boys draw girl's names out of a box and that's their date to the dance so everyone will get a date". Kelly said " I think it's dumb but I figured why not better than being bored Monday night what do you think?" I said, " I don't know. It seems weird, I mean, even if you're dating someone, you can't go with them because of the drawing," Kelly said. " Yeah, that sucks," I said. " It sucks that we can't go together," Kelly said. " I know. Still, the teachers will think it's strange for two girls to go to a dance together even if they are friends they automatically assume you're a dykes". I said " Yeah Jane and I get a lot of weird looks because of how close we are". Kelly winks at me and said " Very close apparently". She's talking about Jane and me having sex that one time. I roll my eyes playfully. If that wasn't Jane, I don't know what Kelly would have done to me in the bathroom. I'm glad she was there. I said, " I'm just worried I'm gonna get a guy that I can't stand". Kelly said, "Yeah, me too, but even if we do, it will be fine." I said, " Hopefully". She pulls up the road by the hospital and turns left into the back parking lot, pulling into a space by Shana's Toyota Supra. She turns off the car and puts the keys in her jacket pocket. We get out, closing the doors, and walk around to the back of the car. Shana is standing with her back to the trunk of her car, holding Jacob by the neck as they make out. Kelly looked over at them and said, "Alright, cool it, children." They stopped kissing, and Shana said, "I could say the same about you two." Shana and Jacob have known about me and Kelly for about two months, and thank god they were cool with it and promised not to tell anyone. Kelly said, "What are you talking about?" Shana said, "Jacob and I saw you two making out in your car up on Sharp's Ridge. I thought you two were about to do it." Kelly said, " Good thing you two didn't stick around too much longer because we did". I blush as Jacob and Shana smile at me. Jane comes walking across the parking lot from a group of girls. Jane is wearing her black leather jacket, a black and white checkered flannel shirt, a pair of dark, high-waisted blue jeans, and her black Chuck Taylors. I'm wearing my blue jean jacket, a black button-down shirt with long sleeves, a pair of dark, high-waisted blue jeans, and my black Nike Pegasus. Kelly is wearing her blue jean jacket, her blue and white checkered long-sleeve flannel, a pair of dark, high-waisted blue jeans, and her blue and white Adidas top tens. Roy's truck pulls up, and Kyle and Jason both get out, walking around the truck. Roy pulls off, waving at us. Jason is wearing his black leather jacket, a black MTV shirt, a pair of dark Wrangler jeans, and his black steel-toed boots. Kyle is wearing his blue jean jacket, his grey White Snake T-shirt, a pair of dark blue Carpenter jeans, and his black Nike Cortez. Later that day, we walked the track after eating lunch. Dakota is walking with me, Kelly, and Jane, while Kyle and Jason are playing football with a group of boys. I catch myself watching Kyle. He runs with the football in his left hand as three boys chase after him. Jason is on the other end of the field, and Kyle throws the ball to him. Jason has another guy beside him. They both jump up in the air. Jason jumps higher than the boy, catching the ball. He takes off, dashing across the grass as the boy struggles to chase after him. Kyle calls out to Kelly, "Babe! Come play with us!" Kelly says, "Nah, I'm good." Kyle runs up to the short black fence as Kelly stands on the other side of it on the track. He said, "Please, the guys really want you to." Kelly said, " Alright." She grabbed hold of the fence and jumped, pulling herself over in one single bound. Her feet land on the ground. Jane and Dakota walk down to the gate and go inside, walking over to the sidelines, where a silver steel bench is located. We all sit down on it. Tiffany walks in the gate and up to Kelly and the boys. She said, "Care if I join?" A boy from the other team motioned for her to get behind them. Ugh.. that bitch just wants to play because Kelly is. Tiffany is on the left team, and Kelly is on the right team with Kyle and Jason. A boy on the left team throws the ball, and Jason jumps, catching it in the air. He takes off running with it, and about four boys from the other team surround him, beginning to tackle him. Two of them miss, and Jason sees the other one. He throws the ball to Kyle, who is running on the side. He catches it, and the boy tackles Jason to the ground. Kyle is running when a boy comes flying through the air on the left side. He dodges him, and the boy hits the ground rolling. Kyle spots Kelly running a few feet away and throws her the ball. She catches it as a boy is about to tackle her, but she does a spin, dodging him as he crashes to the ground. Tiffany is hot on her trail as Kelly runs through the boys, dodging them. A big, heavy-set boy is standing down in front of the goal, blocking the way. Kelly swiftly dodges him as he swipes the air, trying to grab a hold of her small body. Kelly makes it across the goal, throwing the football to the ground as her team cheers. All of a sudden, Tiffany comes flying across the air, tackling Kelly, knocking her to the ground on her back. Tiffany is straddling Kelly; she shoves her off, Tiffany laughing wickedly. That didn't count as a tackle because Kelly already made it across the goal line.
