The Kim Austin Series

Chapter 11

P.O.V/ Kim Austin:

Almost a week later, on December 7, 1982, I got a cashier job at McDonald's on Broadway. That's the only thing I can do because I'm fourteen, and still when I turn fifteen, I can do more. The uniform is hideous. If you know what an early 80's McDonald's uniform looks like, it's the all-blue one with the weird white hat. Kelly will make fun of me if she sees me in that. I'm standing outside on my porch, waiting for her to pull up. I notice a man standing on the sidewalk across the street as she pulls up. He is just standing there doing nothing, and his eyes are glued to Kelly. I walk down and get in the car. I look over, and the man is gone. Kelly looked over there, then back at me. She said, " Looking for your boyfriend?". I glared at the comment. I said, " There was some guy just standing there. Now he's gone". Kelly said, " Probably a druggie." She stopped by the Woodland Market and Deli. She parks the car in front of the store and puts it in park, leaving it running. She said, " You want something to drink?" I said, " Yeah, a Pepsi." Kelly got out of the car, shut the door, and walked inside the store. I see the same man entering the store behind her. Okay, maybe I'm just crazy, or is he following us? Three minutes later, Kelly walks out holding two short bottles of Pepsi in her hands, the 16 oz. She opened the door and got inside, handing me the glass bottle. I hear the sound of the seal cracking as she twists the lid and takes a drink. I opened mine, and while drinking, I saw a homeless man standing by the car. Kelly looks over at him. He said, " Do you pretty gals have any spare change?" He burped rudely. Kelly said in a sarcastic tone, " Why?? so you can go blow it on booze?? get lost, loser!" He got angry and said, " Rude ass bitch!!" She started the car and said, " Eat me!" He perked up then said, " I will for some change." Kelly scoffs, " In your dreams." She puts the car in reverse and backs up. She puts it in first gear and fully depresses the clutch, revving the engine up as the homeless man stands in front of the car a little ways back but blocking the way he is cussing at us. She locks the handbrake, and the tires start squealing loudly, creating a burnout; she releases the clutch easily off the accelerator and frees the brake. She pushes the clutch back in, throws it into first, and goes on the gas, making the car take off at the homeless man. I exclaim, " Kelly!" The man dives out of the way just in time, unharmed, as she speeds off. She's driving down the road, shifting gears.

I said, " You are a dick." She smiled evilly and said, " I wasn't gonna hit him". I said, " Could have fooled me." She takes East Woodland Avenue straight to the school from the store. She pulls into the school, goes up the hill, turns left, up into the back parking lot, turns right, goes down in front of the gym, and turns left into the first parking spot. She puts the car in park and turns off the engine. She pulls the keys out and puts them inside her blue jean jacket. We get out and close the doors, walking around to the back of the car. I sit my drink on the car trunk, and she sits hers by mine. Kelly is wearing her blue jean jacket, black and white checkered flannel, dark high-waisted blue jeans, and white and blue Adidas top tens. I'm wearing my blue jean jacket, navy blue Van Halen shirt with the red symbol, dark high-waisted blue jeans, and grey New Balances. Jane walks up with Jacob and Shana; Jane is wearing her black leather jacket, a black shirt that says Metallica in blue letters, a pair of dark high-waisted blue jeans, and her black and white low-top Chuck Taylor's, Jacob is wearing a Finway high letterman jacket for the baseball team with a maroon F on right side of the chest, a pair of light blue Levi jeans that are original fit and the same pair of black Chuck Taylor's like Jane's except in a men size. Shana is wearing a cropped blue jean denim jacket, a black Led Zeppelin shirt, a pair of dark high-waisted blue jeans, and a pair of black Doc Marten platform boots.

Later that day, after gym class, I was in math class with Jason when the phone on the wall rang. Our teacher, Miss Towers, gets up and answers the phone. She listens to the other person talk, and I can tell by the look in her eyes that something is wrong. She said, " Jason". She motions for him to walk up there. He looks at me, gets up from the desk beside mine in the back, and walks up to her. She hands him the phone, and he says hello. He listens, and I watch as his eyes start tearing up. He said, " Bye, Dad.. I love you too," As his voice broke. He hangs up the phone and storms out of the room and into the hallway. I get up, and Mrs. Towers motions for me to go out there. I walk out in the hallway, and I hear the sound of sobbing. I look to the right and see him sitting on the floor with his back against the lockers. I walk over to him, and he looks up at me with tears streaming from his light brown eyes and down his face. I feel tears streaming down mine as I sit down beside him close. I put my arm around him, and he lays his head on my shoulder as he sobs uncontrollably. I don't even have to ask him what happened cause I already know... Nora passed away. As I hold him, I hear the sound of laughing. I look up at a group of teenage boys pointing and laughing at him for crying.
