Chapter 5

P.O.V/ Kim Austin:

It's been a month since Kelly vanquished Brad, and things have gotten tense... Today is October 4, 1982. It's a Monday, so I'm outside my house waiting for Kelly to pick me up. My mom was already at work, and my dad was off for a week, but he also had to go back to work. He had to drive from Tennessee to California to deliver medical supplies this time. That's mostly what my dad does: deliver supplies to hospitals throughout the United States. That is a thirty-four-hour drive there and back, so he's gonna be gone for a few days. I'm locking the door when I hear the sound of Kelly's engine approaching closer. I turn around, and there sits the car. She rolls her window down as I'm walking up. I walk around and open the door, get inside, and shut the door. I looked at her, and She said, " Do you have anything for a headache?" I pick up my bag and open the small pocket on the outside, pulling out a BC powder packet. I say, " I have a BC powder. I did have Tylenol, but ever since those people died last month in Chicago from taking it, my mom freaked out and threw away all the Tylenol in the house". Kelly said, " It's fine". I hand her the thin paper that has the white powder inside it. She opens it and lets the powder fall from the paper and into her mouth; she picks up a plastic water bottle, takes a drink, and swallows the powder. Ugh.. those taste awful. She didn't even make a face. She even took it with water. Kelly puts the car in drive and drives down the road at the speed limit posted on the streets. We pass the mailman, Ralph Smith, a white man in his early forties. He's a bit strange; I often catch him checking me out. As we pass him, he winks at me, and I see Kelly glare at him. We made it to school about ten minutes later. Kelly pulls into the school, going up the hill by the courtyard. She turns left, going up the small hill to the back parking lot. She drives past the gym, and a random guy darts in front of the car. Kelly quickly puts her foot on the brake, stopping the car suddenly. She beeps the horn at him and says, " Watch where you're going, dipshit!" He ignores her and walks across the parking lot. She pulls into the middle of the first row by the gym. She turns off the car and pulls the key out of the ignition. She puts the keys in the inside pocket of her blue jean jacket. She said, " Dumbass people." I wonder if her headache is going away cause her attitude is even worse right now. I said, " Is your headache going away?" She said, " Yeah, kind of. " I said, " Are you on your period or something?" Kelly looked at me and then said, " What's that supposed to mean?" I said, " Cause you're grumpier than usual. " Kelly smiles then said, " Nah that was a few days ago that's why we didn't have sex for about four days." I said, " I just figured you weren't in the mood." Kelly said, " I just get bad headaches sometimes." I said, " I think I know something that could help". I give her a smile, and she smiles back at me with that grin. She said, " Look who's growing a pair.. where are we gonna go?" Kyle was on the first floor in Woodshop finishing a project before classes started. We get out of the car and walk down the parking lot and down the stairs by the gym. We looked both ways before crossing the street and walked under the catwalk, where a door leads onto the second floor. I open the door, and we walk in. Then, I turn down a set of stairs leading to the first floor, where Woodshop, Auto Class, and a few other special classes are located that I don't know of. We walk down the deserted hallway to the last door, and the sound of a saw can be heard outside. I open the door, and we walk in. Kyle is standing at a huge wooden work table with a big saw built in the middle of it. Kyle has clear safety glasses on. He looks up at us, and Kelly snickers at him. She said, " Those look hella Bono on you". Bono is the male lead singer of the rock band called U2. He always wears sunglasses, sometimes ones that kind of resemble safety glasses. Kyle smiles at us and then takes off the glasses. He said, " Am I better looking than him?" Kelly said, " Yeah, of course ." she smiled at him. He said, " Patrick Swayze?" Kelly said, " You're pushing it ." She smiled at him. I said, " Patrick Swayze is so fine." Kelly groans, " Mmm.. He's yummy". Kelly sees the birdhouse Kyle is building, which isn't simple. It has a lot of design. Kelly said, " Who are you building this for?" Kyle said, " My grandma. She loves watching the birds in the morning while she has her coffee". I said, " That's so sweet". Kelly has no reaction to the sweet gesture. Kyle bends over the table and explains to Kelly the design. As they are talking, I can't help but check them both out. Kyle is a little closer to me than Kelly. While she isn't looking, I grab Kyle's butt because those jeans look so nice on him. He looks out the corner of his eye as Kelly talks. He blushes and smiles, composing his thoughts. Kelly has no clue what just happened. Kelly said, " Anyways, can we borrow the closet?" Kyle joked, " I thought you were out of the closet?" Kelly smiled, then said, " Well, I kind of am. She's not." Kyle smiled and said, " Sure.. too bad the saw will drown out the noise". He winks at her, and then Kelly says, " I know how to be quiet, unlike lungs over here." My face blushes as they look at me. I said, " Oh please, you weren't too quiet when we were in the back of your car up Sharp's Ridge." I smiled at her. She said, " That's because you were hammering my ass". Kyle snickers at the last word. Kelly playfully punched him in the arm and said, " Nasty! That was NOT where it was". I grab her hand and lead her over to the closet. I open the door, and she walks in. I wink at him as I close the door, and he blushes.
