The Kim Austin Series

Chapter 14
P.O.V/ Kim Austin:
A week later, it's Monday, January 17, 1983. Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so there is no school. Kelly and I have been messaging each other on our beepers. She wants me to come over and hang out to watch some movies that she rented. I'm out walking Zeke with my mom. She will be leaving for work soon. She sees the ring on my finger as I'm holding onto Zeke's leash; she says, " Where did you get that ring?" I said, "Kelly gave it to me. "She had a weirded-out look in her eyes. She said, " Kelly gave you an engagement ring?" I said, "It's not." Mom said, "That would be weird for a girl to give you an engagement ring." I said, " Is it weird for girls to get married?" She looked at me and then said, " You know what they say about that stuff.. they're going to hell." I knew she disagreed with homosexuality. I said, " Yeah, I know." I turn my head, looking away from her as we walk. I feel my eyes tear up, but I stop myself from crying. We walk up to the porch, and Mom unlocks the door. I walk in with Zeke and release him from the leash. She walks upstairs and down the hallway to her room to get ready. I walk under the balcony and into the kitchen. I walk up to the fridge and pull out a bottle of water. I twist the cap and take it off, getting a drink. I can't help but feel let down by her, but I can't force her to believe in something that she doesn't. I can never tell my parents about my sexuality. I walk into the living room, and my watch beeps. I look down at the time. It's 4:00pm, and I need to head over to Kelly's. I'm standing in the foyer when I hear my mom coming down the stairs behind me. I turn around, and she's picking up her brown leather purse off the banister rail as it hangs from the leather strap. She said, " Okay, I'm headed off to work. I won't be home until 4:00am, so if you get hungry, you can order a pizza". She holds out a twenty-dollar bill. I said, "I will most likely eat with Kelly and Austin." She said, "Still take this in case you might want something later." I took it and slid it into the front pocket of my jeans. She gives me a hug, and I put my chin on her shoulder. We pull away, and she walks up to the door. She turned around and said, "I love you, Kim." I said, "I love you too, Momma." She said, "Please be careful." I said, "I will.. I'll be with Kelly. "She said, " I know that's what I'm worried about." I said, " Mom I'll be fine I promise." She said, " I know Kim but still." I give her a look that says, 'Please don't worry. 'She said, " If you stay the night with her, let me know." I said, " Okay." She walked out the door and closed it behind her. She drives me crazy with being overprotective sometimes, but she's my mom. That's her job. I wave bye to Zeke as he stands in the doorway of the living room, watching me as I teleport with the use of blue-colored energy. I see him turn his head to the side as he watches me disappear. I teleport on the porch of Austin and Kelly's house. I only teleported out here like this because they have no neighbors for a few miles. I look at the two double wooden doors, which have some kind of stained glass built into them. I walk up to the first door, and I hear the sound of yelling and things breaking going inside the house. I go to knock, and the second door explodes with Kelly flying through it. I exclaim in surprise. She misses the steps and lands in the yard, flipping and rolling onto her sides until she comes to a stop, landing on her stomach. Austin dashes out the door suddenly and kicks Kelly in the ribs hard. She exclaims in pain. He said, " You little bitch!! Look what you did to my fucking door!!" He continued kicking her over and over. I yelled, " Stop!!" I ran down and shoved Austin away from her. He looked down at me and said, " Stay out of this!!" Kelly stumbled up and shoved me back as she took a swing at Austin, punching him in the jaw; blood flings out on the ground in front of me. But Austin didn't even budge. He growls as he swings, uppercutting Kelly. His huge fist smashes her under the chin and sends her flying up into the air, high over her car, where she hits the ground with a thud. I kept yelling at them to stop, but neither one was listening to me. All of a sudden, Kelly comes leaping high into the air, back over the car, and lands on Austin, knocking him to the ground. Kelly is on top of him as she growls, swinging vicious punches at his face over and over in a fit of rage. I see Austin reach for an old lead pipe lying on the ground in the grass. He takes and swings it, hitting Kelly in the face with it as if he were swinging a short baseball bat. She falls to the ground beside him. On her side, I see blood pouring out of her mouth, and a deep gash on her right cheekbone oozes blood. Austin stumbles up and raises the lead pipe in the air over his head. I try to use my telekinesis to disarm him, but Kelly throws her shoe up, kicking him in the balls. Austin exclaims in pain as he drops to his knees with the pipe falling to the ground with a clank. Kelly stumbles up and, snatching the pipe off the ground, raises it up over her head and nails him right in the face with it. Blood flies out as he falls to the ground on his back. She pounces on top of him and savagely beats him with it until he is unconscious as I stand there watching in horror. She gets off of him as she stares down at him, breathing heavily with the bloody pipe in her hand. She tossed the pipe to the ground near him and then said, "Happy birthday, old man."
