I wondered how much more I could handle. These larger-than-life fantasies that they were giving me, seemed like something my subconscious mind wouldn't even dream about. Now that I was seeing it with my own eyes, living it, knowing they did it solely for me, I wondered if I deserved even a percent of their love.
Most people would dismiss all of it as a dramatic flattery by some young boys who had loads of money at their disposal. At a glance, that perspective might even be true. But behind the superficial glamour of lights, their true intentions were what mattered the most.
What mattered the most, was the mix of nervousness and excitement in their faces as we walked the fairy-lit trail to the back of the house. What mattered was the little details they remembered. Whether it was about a passing comment on their hairstyles or the many stories I had tattled about.
To me, it was the firm hand in mine, the interlocked fingers, and the gentle flick of Jake's thumb over my hand. Or the way Sunoo's hand rested on my waist, a thoughtful endeavor towards the length of my dress and the rocky path I was walking on in the heels.
The stone path was lit up just like last night, if not more extravagantly. Blue and white fairy lights covered every tree in sight. A canopy of the same colors stretched over our heads. Glass jars filled with white lights hung on the edges of the path. We were going towards the beach.
My mind raced with so many thoughts of what could be in store. Instead of going through the backdoor from inside the house, we were taking a different path from the side. The cool night air chipped at my bare skin. A comfortable and familiar feeling.
But it felt weird to not feel my glasses. I had had them for as long as I could remember. So, my face kind of felt bare and exposed. Like a layer of comfort had been stripped away from me. But that small discomfort could be easily forgotten while being enveloped between them.
The walk was mostly quiet. Lots of thoughts ran over everyone's minds. I could feel the stress radiating off of them to the point of it being nauseating.
"Why are you so quiet?" I asked.
"Uh...no reason." Jungwon scratched the back of his neck.
"Whatever you've planned will mean little if you look gloomy." I countered.
"But we're not gloomy." He shook his head with wide eyes and turned to Jay. "Are we?"
"Not at all." Jay said.
I gave them a skeptical look. Jay cleared his throat.
"Alright. Stop being nervous." He addressed others.
I suppressed an amused laugh at how they all nodded and visibly pep talked themselves.
"Seriously? What is it that you guys are so nervous about? Be assured that I'll love whatever you do. Okay?" I consoled them.
