It was the initial sound check day. The whole stage and the sound system will be connected today for primary inspection. The final check will be done tomorrow a few hours before the concert.
The whole area was bustling. Staff members were running around with notepads and types of equipment. I watched them take the equipments to the backstage. I could make out the microphones and speakers and musical instruments as well. I had always thought concerts used prerecorded backtracks. But seems like I was wrong.
"So many of them." I murmured.
"Yes, Princess?" Heeseung bent down to hear me.
"I'm saying there are so many of them." I repeated.
"Yeah. Loads." He said. "Come on."
He took my hand and led me down the corridor.
When we reached the venue, I was fully prepared to stay out of anyone's way and just watch from afar. I did not want any of them to pay any attention to me. But it was nearly impossible to do so. Once the actual work started, Heeseung took it upon himself to show me around, saying their job started after a while. And till then, he was free.
We reached the immediate backstage where Jay was already present. He had a straight face on as he watched over the staff who were setting up the equipment. As soon as he saw us approaching, he smiled gently.
"Hey, sweetheart." He held out his hand.
I smiled back and stepped closer to him. He tucked some of my hair behind my ear.
"There's heavy work going on here. Why don't you watch over the maknaes? They must be with the styling unit." Jay said.
"I was showing her equipment." Heeseung answered on my behalf. I nodded at Jay.
"Oh. Go on."
Jay leaned on the nearby wall and crossed his arms to watch us as Heeseung dived into an equipment lesson. He pointed at the set of speakers and microphones along with loads of other small things kept with them.
"Those are the audio equipment. Microphones, speakers, mixing consoles, amplifiers, in-ears, and DI boxes. You see those big black boxes?" He asked me.
I nodded.
"Those are the main speakers. Those smaller ones are monitor speakers and then beside them are the subwoofers." He said.
The only thing I understood was that there were types of speakers. I didn't catch anything about DI boxes or amplifiers as he spoke about them. But I didn't want to interrupt him. He looked so excited to tell me everything about them.
"Then there..." He pointed to some instruments. "...the instruments and backline. Guitars, drums, amps, and effect pedals."
He proceeded to explain what effect pedals were. When he was done and I felt like I had taken a whole class on equipment, Jay beckoned us to a huge table. When I went to his side, I saw there were so many smaller devices arranged on the table.
"These are for communication." Jay said. "Walkie-talkies and intercoms that connect to that cue system over there. Those are our in-ears."
As I nodded, Heeseung appeared in front of me. He had a face mic in his hand. I blinked in surprise when he went to put the mic around my head. And I was even more surprised and mostly shy when Jay proceeded to move my hair for Heeseung to put the mic on. And when the mic was on, he smoothed my hair down.
"You look good in this." Heeseung complimented me.
"Uh-huh. You'd make a pretty idol." Jay said.
I chuckled at that. "Just because of the mic?"
