Last Night in Nocturne
(An excerpt from Part 2)
Midnight—the city's favorite time.
It was always when the clock struck twelve that it had the most fun, when the dull ones surrendered to sleep and its entertainers came alive. The thrill of keeping up with the events across its expanse was intoxicating, like flipping through channels, each one revealing something new.
Until a few months ago, even the industry had become predictable. After all, how long could anyone watch the same performances on repeat? The same parties, the same glitzy gatherings. The same old figures standing on their balconies, basking in the glow of the city lights.
They believed themselves formidable, with others kneeling at their feet, mistaking power for permanence. And they prayed, to always be watched over. Sure, they were being watched. Just not by their God.
And then, she arrived.
The city had felt her presence the moment the metal bird pierced its sky. Something stirred within it—something it hadn't sensed in years. And its first thought?
Monarch.
She carried with her the unmistakable aura of change. A new era loomed over everyone.
War...was on its way.
The city glinted brighter than before. Its hungry presence watching her every moment as she navigated through its expanse. It saw the future clearly. And it had been waiting for the time to approach ever since.
The monarch had returned a few moons ago. She had been away with her people for seven whole moons, and the city had been waiting, restless, eager for her arrival. But when she finally set foot on its land, something about her had changed. Something heavier.
Another fate clung to her now. A tragedy nearly as profound as her own. No—perhaps even more. The city studied it, unraveling its threads, tracing the consequences before they could unfold. This could have been just another doomed story, one of many it had witnessed. But it wasn't.
By the time the moon reached its peak, the city marveled at what it had learned.
This new fate—someone else's fate—had outshone the monarch's fate in terms of tragedy. And the city mourned for the it even before the pieces fell into place.
But that was another story, separate from the horrific fairytale it had already sunk its teeth into. And so, it turned its focus back to what was at hand.
Tonight was the night when its wait would finally come to end.
On this moon, the strings would finally snap into place.

No matter how majestic Milan was, there was something about Seoul that I liked more. The city breathed differently—its lights flickered with a strange rhythm. Even the wind seemed to be holding secrets as it rushed past me. When I first arrived, that eerie presence unsettled me. Now, it was simply a part of me. A constant, like the pulse beneath my skin—like the city had claimed me as its own.
Unreal, isn't it?
But that was what stood out the most to me.
Because now, this was my City.
