"Yeah. I spoke to her. She was...mad. They were going to leave early if I hadn't called by today."
"That would've been disastrous. I can't imagine answering to your parents."
Jay paused in his work as if imagining just how bad the situation would've been. Then he shook the mental image away.
"But time worked in our favor." He said.
I didn't say anything. I was leaning against the counter and Jay was putting away all the things for the night in the kitchen. It was quite late. Almost everyone was in their beds. But there was a reason why I was speaking to him right now. To test the waters.
"Jay?" I called him.
He hummed and looked at me.
"I'm alright now, so why can't I sleep with Sunoo?" I asked him.
Earlier, I briefly spoke to Sunoo in the hallway. He was cheerful at first but his smile had dropped when I mentioned I'll be late to bed and asked him to sleep.
"My Lee...well Jake Hyung will be with you. Just for today though. I'll be back at your side from tomorrow."
He was sad too. So this wasn't his decision. And there was only one person who could decide such things. Jay stopped whatever he was doing and turned to me.
"Yes...you're alright." He said carefully. "But just for today, let Jake be with you."
"Uh-huh. Actually what I wanted to ask for is..." I gulped and looked at his reaction. "What if I say I want to go home for a few nights?"
I saw his expression contort. But it shifted back to a soft one.
"Then I'll tell you otherwise. About how dangerous it could be for you to stay alone." He said.
"I won't be alone. My aunt will be there. She called me earlier to sleep over with my cousins." I said. Which was true.
Jay came over to me and sat down on the chair by the counter. He looked at me with an expression I couldn't understand.
"I would still tell you otherwise. Give you an option of sleeping with me or Sunghoon if you'd like." He said softly.
"And...if you still want something else. I'd have no option but to lock you up, sweetheart."
I should've laughed. Maybe it would've lightened up the mood enough for me to believe he was joking. But I didn't. And maybe it was his eyes that scared me just a bit.
He wasn't joking.
Would he really lock me up here if I wanted to leave? I had no words. He was making empty threats right? To make me stay? But he didn't need to do that. I wasn't being aggressive in my wish, was I?
Or...did I make a mistake in understanding Jay? Would the sweet, caring, and protective man I loved, actually make a prisoner out of me if I didn't listen to him? I couldn't process the prospect of it. It felt so unrealistic to think about.
Seeing my expression, or lack thereof for that matter, Jay sighed. He pulled me close to him. I looked up at him from where I was standing. He trailed his hand down to my wrist to hold my hand. I looked up at him from his higher elevation.
