Ch. 29

We saw a tiny girl wrapped up in a blanket. She had a small Backyardigans backpack but other than that she was alone and seemingly had nothing. I went up to her and she immediately pulled away. "No, no, no, please, no hurt, please," she sobbed. "Honey, i promise id never hurt you, i just wanted to ask you a question my dear," I explained cautiously. She nodded slowly and I took that as a cue to ask my question. "Are you alone, baby?" I asked. "Yes," she said. "Daddy gone, mommy go to big house." "What?" I mumbled quietly not understanding what she meant. "Babe," Ty said. I turned around to him. "I think she means her dad died and her mom is in jail. They call it the big house sometimes." At this point the girl had grabbed her bag and scooted closer to us. I could tell she was more comfortable with us now. We talked with her for a little longer and then we decided to take her home. No one else was going to properly raise her, so she may as well live with people she's comfortable with. I had decided to continue school online anyway (since I was pregnant), so I'd be home. "Baby girl, do you wanna come stay with us?" I questioned. She hesitated, but after a few moments she slowly nodded. She allowed me to pick her up. Ty grabbed her bag and went inside and got the items we needed, as I waited by the car. We had a car set already in the car because of my little cousins that we were supposed to watch later that week, so we put her in there. All we had bought for the babies was bottles and diapers. She seemed to be around one, so we decided to head to the toddler store down the street. Ty had gotten back in the car. He bought me Pringles, which were a craving I had had. And he bought the baby m&ms. I asked her her name and she said, "name is Dana." She said. "Okay, Dana, let's go home."
