Ch. 59

Immediately after I checked into the hospital, the doctor (who was not our usual) came in. "Hello, I'm Dr. Goehring, and I'll be your doctor for today. Now I know I'm not your normal doctor but you called in for abdominal discomfort and that's more my area than your usual. So, if you'll please follow me to Room 19." He smiled. We went to room 19 and Dr. Goehring measured Dana's height and weight. "Alright, now please lay her on this table and I'll feel around her stomach for anything that could've cause any form of abdominal pain." I did as he asked and he washed his hands, put gloves on, and pulled her shirt up just a bit. After a minute or two of lightly pressing on her stomach, he nodded and wrote something down on the notepad next to him. "Okay, so. Basically, the situation is that I believe Dana here has a condition known as Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. I'll explain to you what it means in a minute but before I do, I'd like to make sure you're aware that it is not definite. It could very well be something else, but I've seen a lot of patients come to me for this, and I know what it is when I see it. We might need to do a bit of extra testing to be sure, but I can definitely see that being the problem. Fortunately, it's not that bad and can be controlled for the most part. Essentially, A1AD means that Dana's liver and lungs are deficient in something called Alpha 1 Antitrypsin, which protects the liver and lungs from the harms that smoking and drinking cause. So, while someone who has it could be less effected by smoking and drinking because they have it, Dana would be more effected and it'd take more of a toll on her than another person. So, in short, her liver and lungs are both a bit worse than most and if it is this, she'll need to come in for routine checkups. We can get her an appointment for blood work, or we could do it here, and then you could come back in about a week for diagnosis." I smiled and thanked him, then we left.
