Although I really wanted to help Shoto out, the moment I stepped into the labyrinth of buildings, pipes and pillars made me regret coming to his aid. If only slightly. The damn place was like Field Gamma back at school, only ten times bigger and ten times more confusing.
Racing up a set of stairs, I scanned the area again, constantly checking for any other energy signatures around me. I figured I would be able to spot my heterochromatic-haired boyfriend if I had a higher view. Knowing him, he'd probably be hanging around in the shadows.
As I ran along a long platform, I started to question if he really was here. I hadn't sensed anyone stepping in, and I certainly did sense anyone now. The place was practically a ghost town. Maybe Shoto had moved on already?
"Let's see where we're at, now," Mera's dreary voice echoed through the speakers. "Things have been moving a lot more quickly. Looks like fifty-two, make that fifty-three have passed. And looking on the other side of things, it seems two-hundred and thirty examinees have failed. Less than half the spots are open. Now's the time to move."
"Crap," I muttered, eyes now frantically searching the grounds. "If I don't find Shoto soon, I can kiss my license goodbye." Pushing more energy into my legs, my speed increased, and I almost felt like I was flying.
That was until I rounded a corner and smashed into someone.
"Ugh," I groaned, lifting myself off the ground . "Sorry about that. I wasn't watching-"
"Y/N?" asked a familiar voice, making me stop mid rant.
"Shoto?" Blinking a few times, I found my eyes focussing in on the icy-hot boy, a sense of relief washing over me. "Goodness gracious, Shoto. I've been looking all over for you."
He stood up, but kindly offered me his hand to join him. "Why? I thought I told you I was fine. Or did you just miss me."
I rolled my eyes, but couldn't quite stop the slightest hint of a smile to twitch upon my lips. "Sure, Shoto. Whatever you say."
"Look I appreciate you being here, but why are you here? I can't use my quirk-"
"In big groups, I know. But do I look like a big group to you? Besides, what makes you think you can win this by yourself, huh? Going all lone wolf on us back there was maybe not the smartest move seeing as how other schools know our quirks and how to counter them."
Shoto merely shrugged, irking me to no end at his flippancy. Did this stubborn knucklehead not understand what I was saying? I get that Bakugou and Kirishima did the same thing, but they at least had each other. The two idiots...
I sighed, grabbing a hold of his arm and started dragging him back long the deck.
"Hey," he called, tugging on his arm. "What do you think you're doing?"
"Getting us out of the open and back to our classmates," I said without turning back. "You heard what Mera just said; we need to hurry and get back to where there are actual people, or otherwise we won't pass at all! Now haul ass, Shoto, or else-"
"Look out!"
A gasp escaped me as Shoto gripped tight to me, wrapping his arms around my waist to pull me out of the way of a whizzing object flying by. He raised his left hand, and a pillar of flame went snaking towards the orange ball. It landed not too far away from us, both Shoto and I clinging to each other for a moment to calm ourselves.
"Where did that come from?" I muttered, tearing my eyes away from the fallen object.
"I have a pretty good idea," Shoto said, turning me around to face behind us. "Look up there."
