Jim delicately hooked a snowflake onto an open branch, stepping back to admire part of his work.
Since being a captain meant Jim was busy 99% of the time, Christmas tree decorating had been put off until the night of Christmas Eve.
Still determined to make it a special night regardless, your favorite Christmas movie playing in the background, and the smell of fresh baked goods swirled through the room. On the floor next to the tree, you continued to dig through boxes until you found exactly what you were looking for.
"Here it is!"
You cheered triumphantly, holding up the delicate star.
"Do you want to put it on top honey?"
Jim asked, leaning over to give you a light kiss on the cheek.
Looking back up at the top of the tree, which admittedly was just a little bit out of your reach, you asked dejectedly.
"Give me a boost?"
Jim smiled and nodded, going to grab a stool from the other room.
Just as he set it down, a very loud comm started to go off on the other side of the room.
Unable to contain your disappointment anymore, your shoulders dropped, letting out a huff you continued on with your task as you picked up on the inevitable words.
'Needed on the bridge'
Jim came back into the room mirroring your expression, and when you hopped down from the stool he tightly pulled you into a hug.
"I'm sorry honey, if they need me, they need me"
"I know"
You mumbled softly, gently pushing him towards the door.
As he left, you turned your attention back to the movie, finding it to be the moment when George Bailey prays for help.
Feeling helpless yourself, and a little unnerved by the timing of it you switched it off.
Your eyes fixated back on the star on top of the tree, tears stung in your eyes as you remembered Jim gifting it to you, all of it made by him so you'd always have a bit of him with you at Christmas.
Before anything else could happen, the doors slid open again.
Instead of looking up though you just shouted
"No one's in at the moment"
"I'm an idiot"
Jim announced, holding something behind his back.
Sitting up, you laughed lightly.
"I should've told Spock to handle whatever was going on from the beginning, I'm sorry"
He apologized earnestly, sitting down next to you.
"Can I make it up to you a bit?"
Revealing a piece of mistletoe, he held it over your head.
Wiping away your tears, you pulled him closer by the collar of his uniform and connected your lips.
He dropped the mistletoe, letting his hands wrap around your waist.
"I do still need to leave for 5 minutes but that's only because I stole the mistletoe from the med-bay"
Pushing Jim down on the couch into a hug, both of you laughed.
The holidays are never easy, sometimes the pain of life is too intense for a holiday to cover up, but as Jim gently rubbed circles on the small of your back, it's a wonderful life back on, the pretty lights casting their colors over the whole room.
As George Bailey clutched both his wife and children in his arms, you smiled briefly as for a brief moment, you realized this funny feeling settling in your chest might just be peace.
At last.
