You were the brand new hot shot at star fleet, you'd gotten through starfleet with flying colors and the fastest, you were on track to become one of the youngest captains star-fleet but certain admirals weren't pleased about just how quickly and how well you'd done.
So it was decided that you would get some 'field training' basically all they told you was that you were going to start on a starship and 'learn' what ever you could.
It was obvious to you from the start that this was their way of saying that they didn't want you to be a captain. Of course they would never say that out loud which only added to fuel to the fire of your burning resentment.
It took 2 years for that resentment to become anger, anger because a bunch of good for nothing admirals were envious that you got through it faster and better than they did.
Given your personality Captain Jean-luc Picard tried to keep you as far away from Data, Thinking that you might end up making some pretty horrible remarks about him.
It was a big shock to everyone to see the way you stood up for Data when Pulaski was less than friendly to him, You'd corrected her with the speed of light when she called him a robot.
Later that same evening Data came to your quarters with a flower as a thank you gift.
After a little bit of awkward conversation, You and Data had become as thick as thieves.
You found a comfort with him, he was an unknown, an exciting unknown.
Most of that comfort lie in the fact that you didn't have to be anything around Data.
He respected that you wanted to keep that image up though so any little time you showed any other side of your personality he kept it a secret.
A month later your relationship became more intimate, but you kept it under wraps.
In the Afternoon, finally after 3 years it was decided you could become a captain.
That news which 3 years ago would've been exciting, took you off guard so much so that when Data came back into your quarters you unexpectedly collapsed.
When you woke up Data had moved you to the med-bay, and the moment you saw him, you began to sob. The worst part of the whole thing was the thought of choosing between Data or proving them wrong and becoming a captain.
As happy as becoming a captain made you, the happiness that data offered you, the feeling of being yourself felt so much better.
Beverly pulled Data aside and you could hear her explaining to him
"Nothing is wrong with her, we can put her collapse down to emotional stress"
After a few moments Data sat down next you and took your hand in both of his.
"Y/n, what has happened that is causing you this much emotional distress"
He asked gently, letting go of one of your hands he cupped your cheek and brushed your tears away.
"I..I could become a captain"
Sniffling slightly, data sat up on the bed wrapping his arm around you waist and pulling you close.
"The choice is yours y/n, but I know how much being the captain matters to you. I can wait forever for you"
He pressed his lips against yours, relaxing into it until Beverly coughed from in front of you both.
"As sweet as the two of you are, I do need these beds open"

A MONTH LATER

You took a few deep breath's as you made it to the docking bay, data held your hand the entire time until you were standing on the docking bay.
You'd seen a couple of people board already, but that felt like no comfort to you.
You and Data embraced for a few minutes, reluctantly pulling away you walked into a shuttle and sat down towards the front.
You looked out of the window for a second to see data in the crowd waving at you.
You waved back when a voice spoke from behind you
"Excuse me captain"
You didn't realize you were in someone else's spot when they pulled you away from your thoughts.
You had your whole career in front of you, but your heart still lay in the enterprise.
